Chanaet’s story

Chanaet is 11 years old.

She lives in Kenya with her family.

Chanaet loves playing games with her sisters and brother. Her favourite game is hopscotch.

Droughts are common in the area that Chanaet lives. Recently people say they are getting worse.

Lately there has been more sunshine than rain. I am always very happy when I see the rains because I know it means the crops will grow. When it rains our goats get pasture and we get milk.

Drought and changes in climate is making life harder for families. CAFOD is working together with people to find ways to adapt.

It means that the crops grow even if there is not enough rain.

Here water is being pumped from the river to water crops, using a solar powered pump.

Chanaet’s mum works with other women in the greenhouse. They sell the tomatoes they grow to help raise money for their families to have the things they need.

I love the greenhouse where my mum works because I know they are growing tomatoes there all year round. It’s important for people to work together so that they can help each other.

I am happy that the water is pumped into the greenhouse because of the sun. Thanks to the sun, the tomatoes grow.

•How does the climate affect Chanaet’s family?

•How do you think Chanaet’s family feel about the greenhouse project?

•Why is the solar pump so great?
