The boomer generation was often advised to swap hardhats and toolbelts for busi-ness suits and briefcases if they wanted a challenging, rewarding career. Today, it’s the skilled trades fi eld that offers one of the best pathways to a satisfying, well-paying career with unlimited opportunities for professional growth. These jobs are in high demand and are projected to remain so since they are dif-fi cult to outsource and many tradespeople are nearing retirement age. “We’re dealing with an aging workforce,”confi rms Brad Mason, Director of Opera-tions at AMSEC, a marine services company. “The average age of our employees here who work on what we call the deck plate is in the high 40s, maybe close to 50 years old. What that means is that in the next ten years there is going to be a lot of turnover. So for new people coming in who want to pick up a skill, they’re going to make a very good living. And for those with initiative, there’s the opportunity to become a supervi-sor very quickly.”Not only is there plenty of opportunity for advancement on the job, but skilled trades-people who want to work for themselves are in an ideal position to don the boss’s cap. “The thing about these skills is that they’re transferable if you want to start your own business,” explains Mason. “We often see a welder or an electrician or one of the other trades open up their own shop and they do quite well for themselves.”Jeff Ainslie, President of Ainslie Group, a local building fi rm, agrees. “Just because you start out working as a carpenter’s helper hammering nails in summer doesn’t mean you’re going to do that for the rest of your life,” he says. “But having that fi eld knowl-edge is indispensable when it comes to running your own business.” Ainslie worked his way up from a laborer position, eventually starting his own com-pany. He works with skilled tradespeople who’ve become independent contractors all the time. “I would say that about 80 percent of the businesses we deal with are small businesses,” he estimates. Rather than marking a deadend career, skilled trades jobs open a world of possibili-ties. In fact, tradespeople receive some of the most sophisticated technical training available. “There’s a lot of technology out there and you’re using your brains and your hands,” notes Thomas Stout,Program Head for electromechanical controls at Tidewater Com-munity College. “We have three programming classes in our electromechanical con-trols program and the techs spend as much time interfacing with computers as they do looking at switchboards and panels.” “People have the wrong impression of those 18,000 tradespeople who go to work at Newport News Shipbuilding every day,” adds Mason. “I call them technicians because that’s what they are. One example: Tidewater Community College developed a class for our electricians on programmable logic controllers, which is nothing more than a fancy name for a small computer that controls a device. But the Navy is using them on every piece of electrical equipment now. Laundry equipment, dishwash-ers, giant pumps that move large loads, air conditioning systems – they all have these programmable logic controllers and our electricians have to be trained to troubleshoot and repair them.” Even roofi ng has gone high tech. “It’s not perceived as a very technical trade, but in reality it is,” says Ainslie. “Today we have dramatically more complicated roofi ng lines, many more roof-wall intersections, and a multitude of new synthetic materials that all maintain their own separate set of chemical properties, and sometimes they don’t all play well together. So the tradesperson who comes in has to be very techni-cally profi cient.” Among the trades, you’ll fi nd hundreds of job specialties that cater to a wide variety of interests. Career switchers, new high school grads, professionals who already have a college degree – the fi eld is wide open to anyone with an interest and a desire to learn. Both males and females are equally welcome. “Many years ago you’d be hard pressed to fi nd a woman in this business, but I don’t see that anymore,” says Mason. “We have a number of tradespeople who are women and there’s no difference in their capabilities whatsoever. In fact, in some skill areas, we fi nd they are absolutely the best. “Right now we have a shortage of skilled workers and a backlog of work. I would encourage you to look at some of these jobs, see what interests you and then apply.”

The shipbuilding/ship repair industry is a major economic driver in this region, employing tens of thousands of tradespeople in well-paying jobs, but it’s not all smooth sailing right now. “There’s a shortage of skilled workers,” explains Brad Mason, Director of Operations at AMSEC, a marine services company. “We have a backlog of work. You see companies that compete against each other in the business world, yet we’re all cooperating to fi nd ways to train new employees, which is kind of unprecedented.” Mason doesn’t see the need for shipbuilding and ship repair tradespeople lessening any time soon. “I like to remind people that we’re a maritime nation – in some respects we’re an island nation – and there’s a lot of work out there. Our company does Navy work primarily, but there’s also work in commercial shipbuilding and repair, and work with the cruise lines. I think this is a fairly steady business for the future.” The shipbuilding trades comprise a wide variety of specialists, including welders, electricians and carpenters.“There are also laggers who install insulation, pipefi tters, and pattern makers,” lists Mason. “You’ve got electronics technicians, outside machinists, inside machinists, shipfi t-ters who cut and position metal on the ship, and riggers who use chain falls and cranes to move heavy loads, like a section of the ship that might weigh 900 tons. There are a lot of different skills represented in a shipyard.” Skilled tradespeople can expect excellent opportunities to advance and training resources that are second to none. For instance, many of the shipyards and marine services companies hire apprentices and pay them to learn a trade. “Our starting salaries for an unskilled person averages around $14 an hour, which doesn’t sound like a lot, but if they pick up a skill and work hard, by the end of four years they can be in the $45,000 - $50,000 range and they don’t have the school debt that other folks have in-curred for their education. “This can be extremely rewarding work, both from a fi nancial and personal basis,” Mason notes.

If you’re looking for a rewarding career in a growing fi eld that can’t be outsourced, then becoming an automotive mechanic is a great choice. “There are always jobs,” says Bud Brueggeman, TCC’s automotive technology program head.“Even during the slowdown there were jobs for automotive techs. It’s one of those fi elds where if you are a skilled employee, you can get a job.” Along with a great deal of job security, the fi eld also offers the opportunity to work in an increasingly high-tech environment. “When I fi rst started, computers were just being introduced into vehicles,” recalls Larry Grubb, the auto tech coordinator at Tidewater Tech. “A lot of technicians at that time didn’t want any part of it,” he laughs. “Today just about every single system on a car is computer controlled in one way or the other, from brakes to lights and steering suspension. What we’re seeing is that students nowadays are technically savvy, so that defi nitely helps them grasp a lot of this.” Grubb says the complex work that automotive techs perform is just the beginning of where the fi eld is heading. “It’s getting very interesting. I’ve been doing this for probably 30 years now or longer and it’s as exciting for me today as when I was fi rst starting out because the technology keeps changing; there’s something new to learn all the time. Now there’s this new fuel injection, there are the hybrids and there are all the alternative fuels – it’s hard to imagine where this area is going to go.” People who enjoy problem solving are a good fi t for this occupation, Grubb says. “When you have a vehicle come in with a problem, being able to address that challenge and see it leave with the issue repaired is very satisfy-ing.” The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a fi ve percent growth rate in automotive mechanic and tech openings through 2018, with a current median hourly pay rate of $16.88. Experienced mechanics with formal automotive training and top-notch diagnostic and computer skills can command more than $28.71 per hour.

Almost every product we use travels by truck at some point - food, clothing, house-hold products, equipment, even the cars on a dealership lot – which explains the nearly 3.2 million trucks on the road today. The sector is already one of the largest in the country, but by 2018, the Bureau of Labor Statistics expects the number of jobs to jump by nine percent. That increased demand for more drivers – just as many of the older pros reach retirement age – means trucking careers are shifting into high gear. “We have companies that come in and actually recruit our students right out of school,” reports Matthew Woods, an instructor for Tidewater Community College’s truck driving program. Age and gender is no barrier to entry. “We have males and females and our students range in age from 21 to maybe 65,” he says. Drivers can choose over-the-road runs that take them all the way across the coun-try, or work pick-up and delivery hauls within their city or region. “A lot of companies are moving to regional driving now, strategically pinpointing their work centers so that drivers stay in a 200-300 mile radius, which gives them more time at home with their families,” says Woods. To enter the industry, drivers must pass a Department of Transportation physical and earn a commercial driver’s license (CDL). Several local career schools and community colleges offer specialized training programs, including TCC’s eight-week program that features state-of-the-art simulators as well as a skills range for actual wheels-on-the-road driving experience. Once students complete the TCC course, DMV examiners come to the school to conduct the licensing tests. “Most of our students probably start off at about $36,000 a year, but a seasoned truck driver with maybe fi ve years of experience will make anywhere from $50,000 to around $70,000,” Woods says. Aside from good pay and the security of knowing a driving career isn’t likely to be outsourced, trucking also appeals to those who prize their independence. Once drivers pull away from a loading dock, there’s no one looking over their shoulders and that can be very rewarding indeed.

When your A/C goes out in the middle of a heat spell or your heater begins to make whimpering sounds just as the barometer reaches brrrrrr, the HVAC tech who walks through your door can easily claim Most Important Person on the Planet status at that moment. Along with maintaining our homes and offi ces at comfortable temperatures, HVAC techs keep cavernous restaurant freezers humming along, ICU hospital units warm, refrigerated trailer-trucks on the road, climate-critical manufacturing rooms just-so, and touch every part of our business and personal lives in some way. Not surprisingly, these indispensable workers are seeing job growth increases projected at 28 percent through 2018 by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, which is much faster than average for the occupations they track. “The last research I did nationwide, the HVAC industry was roughly 50 percent undermanned,” says Dennis Brakeville, director of education and an HVAC expert at Tidewater Tech. Brakeville points to an aging workforce compounded by increased regulatory mandates to explain the growing need for HVAC techs. “Just as the average welder is reaching age 55, that holds true with the HVAC industry,” he explains. HVAC techs can choose from three specialty areas, he says – “Residential; light commercial, which involves working with things like restaurant equipment, walk-in coolers and freezers; and commercial, such as the big buildings downtown where they deal with the centrifugal chillers and direct digital controls. If you’re an HVAC technician, you’re a mechanical expert, you’re an electrical expert, you’re an air fl ow expert and you’re a chemist.” Most HVAC techs enter the fi eld after going through a six-month to two-year program offered by career and technical schools or community colleges. “Our program is 45 weeks,” says Brakeville, “and by the end of those 45 weeks, they have already taken their EPA certifi cation exam.” The median hourly wages of HVAC techs is $19.08, with top earners making more than $30.59 an hour. “Our very fi rst HVAC graduate several years ago went to work at the Hilton Hotel and he started at $27 an hour – I wanted to take his job,” laughs Brakeville.

Auto body technicians smooth dents, replace crushed panels and restore paint to pristine condition. While there is a tremendous amount of technology involved, what they do is nothing less than an art form, and good techs can command top pay and job security. The Bureau of Labor Statistics characterizes job opportunities as excellent for techs with
formal training, especially as older workers near retirement age and need to be replaced. Larry Grubb, the auto tech coordinator at Tidewater Tech, says he’s already hearing from lo-cal auto body shops about openings they’re trying to fi ll. “They’re telling me that they wish there were more training programs in this area because they’re having a hard time fi nding trained technicians.” Grubb says that one place area students can fi nd a good auto body program is in some of the local high schools. The Virginia Beach public school system, for instance, offers a two-year auto body program that covers everything from estimating repair costs and analyzing body damage to welding, power sanding and spray painting. Students who complete the program can either enter the job market directly or opt for additional training at community colleges or career and technical schools. Certifi cation by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) is the
industry standard and techs may take up to four ASE Master Collision Repair and Refi nish Exams. Those who pass all four earn the master technician credential. Some techs specialize in painting, fi xing fi berglass bodies or repairing automotive glass,
while others discover a love for restoring classic cars. The median hourly pay for automotive body technicians, including incentive pay, is
$17.81, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That average is higher for techs who work for dealerships and the top ten percent of earners bring home more than $30.17 an hour.

While the pilots and air crew are the public face of every successful fl ight, behind the scenes are the aviation and avionics equipment mechanics who are responsible for keeping the craft in sound repair and safely aloft. The highly-trained techs check every inch of the plane inside and out using sophisticated monitoring equipment; they test every system and structure, keep detailed records, take apart engines and make needed repairs or replacements when necessary, then return the aircraft to the sky. Aviation mechanics with the industry-standard A&P certifi cate are qualifi ed to work with the body and engine of the airplane, says Jerry Lee, Director of Education at Aviation Insti-tution of Maintenance in Chesapeake. “Avionics equipment mechanics deal with all the equipment inside the plane like radar and navigation. Until a few years ago, companies looked for either aviation mechanics or avionics techs – today they want someone who can do both jobs.” FAA-certifi ed schools offer training programs that span 12- to 24 months. “Our aviation mechanics program by itself runs 19 months and the aviation mechanics program combined with avionics takes 23 months,” reports Lee. Aviation and avionics equipment mechanics should see a job growth increase of 7 per-cent through 2018, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics, and Lee says their graduates are experiencing no problems fi nding jobs.“As a matter of fact, we actually have employers call-ing in and asking for students with their A&P certifi cate because they have openings.” Lee has seen his students claim jobs with major and regional airlines, and with govern-ment contractors. Aviation mechanics also fi nd homes in fi elds like the aerospace and automotive industries. “We’ve even had Busch Gardens hire some of our graduates to work on the roller coasters since they involve hydraulics,” he says. The median hourly pay is $24.71 and can go higher than $33/hr. for top earners; job perks include free air travel. Lee says it’s no surprise to him that the fi eld is becoming more popular. “Our school stays packed now.”

Skilled tradespeople in the construction industry are extremely adaptable to changing economic conditions, giving them an enviable resilience. In cyclical boom times, they can’t work enough hours to satisfy demand. During down-
turns, their talents make way for them in related sectors – homeowners still need to replace aging roofs, businesses have to maintain their heating and cooling systems, and manufactur-ers are dependent on miles of wiring to deliver uninterrupted power. Construction occupations run the gamut from helpers to site inspectors and most should
see a healthy increase in demand through 2018, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Jobs for carpenters, cement masons, brickmasons, tile setters, drywallers and electricians are expected to increase by 12-14 percent, while insulation installers and construction laborers should see an increase of 17-20 percent. The pay can be quite good. Electricians earn a median hourly wage of $22 with top
earners claiming over $38 an hour. Those who are skilled in voice, data and video wiring will see the most demand, though in Hampton Roads marine electricians with shipbuilding and ship repair experience are especially sought after. Right now, the construction industry is being impacted by an aging workforce. “We have a generational skipping,” explains Jeff Ainslie, President of Ainslie Group, a local building company. “Years ago many of these skilled trades were taught through practical experience and then later on through trade schools or apprenticeships, but most of those have gone by the wayside.” To help counter that trend, the Tidewater Builders Association created the Building Trades
Academy, where students learn trades that are in demand locally, such as carpentry, HVAC, electrical and plumbing. Many area builders and subcontractors welcome apprentices and interns as well. “If someone is interested in any of the building trades, they can contact the Tidewater
Builders Association (757-420-2566)for more information or talk to their guidance coun-selor,” advises Ainslie.

Apprenticeship Programs
One of the best options for entering a skilled trade is through an appren-ticeship program. Here in Hampton Roads you’ll fi nd a wide assortment of opportunities, from local trade groups to regional employers who offer regis-tered apprenticeships that give new hires the opportunity to earn a paycheck while they work toward their journeyman’s card. Tidewater Community College, working closely with industry partners, has helped develop many of these programs, including one for AMSEC, a marine services company. “Our apprenticeship program runs three to four years, depending on how we structure it and what previous educational background the people who go into it have,” notes Brad Mason,Director of Operations. “We structure it around both academic and hands-on training coupled with a journeyman’s program that we do with the state of Virginia. “During the day, our apprentices work with assigned supervisors, and they have to obtain certain practical levels to fulfi ll the requirements of the state’s journeyman program. Then on their own time, they attend classes at Tidewater Community College. The company pays for their education and their books, then we give them guaranteed pay raises above and beyond what they normally would receive every year. We also have an agreement with them that when they fi nish the program, we give them a cash incentive award.” If you’re interested in becoming an apprentice, start with the individual companies that offer them. “With most of these programs, the companies hire their apprentices and then send them on a training track,” describes Thomas Stout, Program Head for electromechanical controls at Tidewater Community College. “The internal training track gives them the on-the-job training and TCC does the classroom portion. “By the time you fi nish your apprenticeship program, you’re only a very few credits away from earning your associate’s degree, so it’s very easy to complete,” he says. “And many of these businesses want their apprentices to have that associate’s degree. What I tell students is you might think you just want to be an electrician today, but in a few years you may want to be the manager and we’re preparing you for the future. These students are going to be the maintenance supervisors and leads. When you look at some of these companies, the apprentices actually move up the chain fairly rapidly and into positions of leadership and management.” TCC designs their apprenticeship courses around a company’s specifi c job requirements and stays abreast of local industry needs through advisory com-mittees that work with each of their career and technical programs. “The committee advises me on the direction this program should go so that we stay current and relevant,” explains Stout. “They’re some of the larg-er employers around here and they’ll tell us, ‘For your students to be viable in our industry, to meet our needs now and in the future, they need to know this and take classes in that,’ and we respond by changing the curriculum to meet those needs.” The Tidewater Builders Association is also careful to stay in sync with local job needs when determining what programs to offer at their Building Trades Academy. “We’ve adapted the courses over the years to the high
growth jobs,” says Jeff Ainslie, President of Ainslie Group, a local builder. “Currently we’re doing classes for plumbing, electrical, HVAC and carpen-try.” Apprentices start with an overview of construction trades, then focus on the area that interests them the most, Ainslie says. Graduates are quickly ab-sorbed by local building, plumbing, HVAC, electrical and other companies. “We’ve also had a number of the apartment management companies come to us to tailor programs for property management and maintenance,” he says. “But here’s the coolest thing – when you go into the trades as an appren-tice, you get paid to go to school. Let’s say you want to be an electrician and you’re working on your license. You’re going to be paid probably $14-16 an hour, you’re going to have benefi ts and you’re going to learn by work-ing alongside a master. In two or three years you’ll get your own master’s license, maybe you’ll stay in the trade, maybe you’ll teach someone who’s now working alongside you, or maybe you’ll decide to start your own com-pany. But your whole education was paid for and you were earning money the entire time.” In exchange for your time and effort, you reap a richly satisfying career – that’s one smart investment. “I’m fortunate that some time ago someone convinced me that career and technical education was the way to go and it’s been very rewarding for me,” shares Stout. Now he’s returning that favor. “If someone is interested in learning more about these programs, they can talk to me or one of faculty advisors,” he offers, “or they can talk to someone in that trade.” You’ll also fi nd a wealth of information on apprenticeships and other skilled trade education options on TCC’s website at www.tcc.edu, or by call-ing 757-822-1122. For more information on the Building Trades Academy, visit www.tbaonline.org and click on the academy link or call 757-420-2566.
