CASSAVA (KAMOTENG KAHOY)

Locally known as kamoteng kahoy or balinghoy,

cassava (scientific name: Manihot esculenta)

ranks second only to sweet potato in hectarage

among root crops produced in the country. It is

mainly grown for its tubers which are a rich

source of carbohydrates. Unknowingly, it is a

good source of calcium and ascorbic acid.

In the future, cassava will remain to be an important

agricultural crop, not only in the Philippines but also in other

countries, because of its versatility. Cassava has several

uses, ranging from being a staple food to being an ingredient

of animal feeds. Recently, scientists discovered more of its

industrial applications. It can be an excellent raw material for

the production of feedstock and of ethanol for conversion into

biofuel. Because its source is sustainable and the yield is

biodegradable, cassava is environmentally friendly. Its

adaptability is well proven; it can thrive in a wide range of

ecological conditions—from easily drained and fertile soils to

lands unsuited for other agricultural crops. Only eight months

and it is all ready for harvesting.

INITIAL CONCLUSION

Evaluation was conducted five (5) months after field planting by NCI

and by the representatives of PHILAGRO namely Mr. Deodato V.

Galaura, Growers Development Department Head and by the Farm

Supervisor.

The rating was done collectively by NCI and PHILAGRO

representatives.

Based on the results, the trial that exhibited the best

growth is trial 3 which is the combination of PARADISO

GREEN with lime and inorganic fertilizer. The second

best in terms of growth performance is trial 4 which is a

combination of PARADISO GREEN with organic fertilizer.

The third best are trials 1, 2, 5 and 6 which exhibited an

average growth rate.
