Roll HandlingYazid Eideh, David Evans, Ben Johnson, Ben Keach, Dan Richards

Thank You● Our group would like to thank Spaulding Composites for giving us

the opportunity of working with them at their plant. This opportunity

has bettered us as safety professionals and will help us begin our

careers.

Overview

● Scope of Work● Methods and Findings● Videos● Controls/Recommendations● Questions & Answer Period● Closing

3

Agenda

● Examined Warehouse

● Thoroughly watched/recorded process

● Determined Possible Solutions

● Followed up with Research

● Chose best Alternative

4

Scope Of Work

● Roll Handling Process

● Ergonomics

● Eliminating Injuries

5

Roll Handling Process● Rolls must travel from point A to Point B● Rolls must be maneuvered from horizontal to vertical or

vice versa● Roll must be held in place while rod is put through the

center of the roll● Rod with roll on it must be placed onto machine and

locked into place

6

Video of Process

7

Ergonomics

● Eliminate improper lifting

● Incorporate easily usable Machinery

● Prolong the Workers Career

● Avoid unnecessary costs due to Workers Compensation

8

NIOSH Lifting Equation● Specific Parameters must be met:

○ No twists/turns○ Load is held 25cm from body○ Load is held 75cm from the floor○ Load should not be lifted more than an

additional 25 cm○ Handles are present allowing for easy

carrying○ Low frequency of lifts: 1 per 5 minutes per

8 hour shift

9

Methods● Unsuccessful methods

o PPE Use of back belts Incorporating handles onto rolls

o Administrative Job Rotation Different Type of Training

10

Methods ● Successful Methods

o Engineering Controls Equipment to Move Rolls

● Lifts● Rotates● Holds in Place● Weighs excess

11

Video of Machine

12

Specs of Machine

● Lifts up to 600 Pounds

● Fits through 30” wide clearance

● Powered by 24 volt rechargeable battery

● Lifts up to 6’ above ground

13

Additional Options

● 12” or 26” Clamp

● Side shifters: Allowing the roll to move 4” side to side

● Clamping Pressure Regulator

● Scales to weigh unused materials

14

Findings

● Lifting without handles exponentially increases difficulty

● With handles, team lifting would still be needed due to

overwhelming weight

● Use of manpower can not eliminate twisting motion as

seen in unloading process

15

Findings● During transition process:

o Roll is twisted into upright positiono Roll may or may not be located at proper distance

from body and flooro Depending on where the roll is grabbed, it obeys the

additional height ruleo Handles are not present, making the lift much more

difficulto Low frequency of lifts per day

16

Machine Disadvantages

● Large cost up front

● Provide training on new equipment to employees

● Wait time for shipping

17

Machine Advantages● Avoid lower back injuries from lifting/twisting

● Operates faster than employees manually transferring rolls

● Multiple different attachments

● Provides alternative for easier weighing of excess

● Quick payback period from:

o Increased productivity

o Decreased workers comp claims

18

Questions & Answers

19

Closing● Again, we want to thank Spaulding Composite’s Inc. for

providing us the opportunity of gaining experience and furthering our knowledge on providing workers with a safe workplace.
