All matter has mass and volume.

Volume is the amount of 3-D space an object occupies.

Mass is a measure of the amount ofmatter in an object.

There are 2 ways you can classify matter.

An element is a pure substance made of only 1 kind of atom.

An atom is the smallest unit of an element that keeps the properties of that element.

Carbon, Hydrogen, and Oxygen are all examples of individual elements.

Each element specifically contains only 1 kind of atom

This makes each element a pure substance.

A compound is a substance that is made of 2 different elements that are chemically bonded.

Compounds consist of molecules. Water (H2O) is an example of a compound. It is

made of 2 elements, hydrogen and oxygen. The atoms of Hydrogen and Oxygen are chemically bonded to form a water molecule.

A mixture is a blend of 2 or more kinds of matter, each of which retains its own identity and properties.

They can be classified as: Homogeneous mixtures

Heterogeneous mixtures

Uniform composition They have the same proportion of components

throughout or they are mixed evenly. Homogeneous mixtures are also known as

Are not uniform throughout.. Meaning the particles are unevenly

distributed.
