Tobogganing Hills OPEN
For a safer outdoor winter experience, the Community Services Department has established two ‘safe sled hills’ for sledding and tobogganing. These hills are fenced, signed, have straw bales in place to identify the sledding area, and have proper outruns. The two areas are:
♦ Jubilee Park (47 Avenue & 50 Street) – which has a light on a timer in the area
♦ Grand Drive Park (West of 58 Street on the South side of Grand Drive)
We discourage use of other areas throughout the valley for safety reasons. For further information call 780-672-9195

Family Day Activities
Both MEND 2-4 (90 minutes each session) & MEND 5-7 (1 hour and 45 minute session) are weekly for 10 weeks. MEND is aimed at children and
their families. It combines active play, nutrition and behaviour change. Each session includes active play and snack time where children and parents
participate together. Additionally, creative play sessions just for children, and information sessions specific for parent are provided.
Parent topics include:
• Healthy eating for families
• Mealtime struggles
• Portion sizes
• Healthy habits
MEND 2-4 program is open to all children aged between 2-4 and their
parents.
MEND 5-7 program is a healthy lifestyle program for children who are at risk, or above a healthy weight and their families.
Triple P- How to manage your Toddler’s Tantrum! Tantrums may start at about 12 months of age when toddlers are becoming more
independent. They may appear to be demanding, stubborn and uncooperative. Often tantrums are common in 2 year olds but if managed well, they will be less common as your child matures.
Tantrums can include: • crying,
• screaming/yelling, • stamping feet,
• rolling on the floor or • holding their breath
They occur when children feel angry or frustrated. Examples include: when they are told no, when things do not go the way they expect, when they’re unable to manage difficult tasks, when they do not know the words to express what they want, or they are
overtired. There are some simple ways to help prevent tantrums such as:
• avoid having to say No and Don’t Touch too often, • have a few (1-2) necessary and realistic rules, • try to build a routine for meals and sleep times,
• tell your child what you are doing and what is going to happen so they know what to expect throughout the day,
• watch your child and praise them for behaving well. Here are a few key steps to managing a tantrum when they
do occur: • use planned ignoring (for younger toddlers),
• praise your child as soon as they are quiet or behaving well, • tell your child specific instructions and • use time out if the tantrum continues.
For more information on how to prevent and manage tantrums, or if you have any other issue or concern regarding your child’s behaviour please contact a Camrose Family
Resource Centre Staff at 780-672-0141 or drop into our centre!

Resources for Families - Ages and Stages Questionnaire and SE (social emotional)
We offer the Ages and Stages Questionnaire for parents to use to give themselves a ‘snapshot’ of their child’s
development. The Ages and Stages Questionnaire – SE offers parents a ‘snapshot’ of their child’s
development in the Social Emotional area. If you wish to access the ASQ or the ASQ-SE, please ask a staff
member to help you. The questionnaires range from 2 months to 60 months of age.
What Is the Ages and Stages Questionnaire?
This is a simple questionnaire that the parent fills out at home. It is based on the age of the child and asks
specific questions based on the child’s development in the following areas:
Fine motor Problem-solving Communication
Personal-social Gross Motor
What Is the Ages and Stages Questionnaire - SE?

The project is a partnership between Alberta Education and Alberta Children and Youth Services. The focus of the project is to provide families and schools not only information and strategies to effectively deal with bullying behavior but to work with the Camrose Parent Link Centre to empower and strengthen families in an effort to target prevention.
Currently, the Taking Action on Bullying program is at Charlie Killam School providing:
• In class lessons on bullying education and prevention, individual and family support
• Recess supervision, peer mentor groups, student leadership training, staff consultations and support
The project is also at the Camrose Parent Link Centre providing:
• Workshops for families, family consultations and support regarding bullying, resource information • Assist with Camrose Family Resource Centre parent groups, group presentations to both the
community at large and to other schools
The Taking Action on Bullying project intention is to not only share effective strategies to deal with current bullying situations but to take a preventative role by offering/facilitating parent/caregiver workshops and groups which strive to assist in building their connection with their child.

Discussion Group Triple P - Triple P Discussion Group is a short small group session run by a trained Triple P
practitioner. Each session brings together a maximum of 10-12 parents who are experiencing the same parenting issue.
In a relaxed group session, your practitioner will give you tips and suggestions for dealing with your child’s problem behaviour. You’ll see short video clips showing other parents successfully dealing with the same issue and you’ll be encouraged to share your thoughts with the other parents in the group, if you wish to. You’ll also be given a take-home workbook with simple exercises and information to help you try your new strategies at home.
You are welcome to attend one discussion or all of them.

Great recipe to get the kids to eat veggies!
Pita Pizza Pita Pizza Pita Pizza Pita Pizza (From Jessica Seinfeld's wonderful cook book Deceptively Delicious)
Prep time: about 15 minutes
Ingredients:
• 8 (4-inch) whole-wheat pita pockets
• 1/2 cup spinach puree
• 2 cups bottled tomato sauce
• 2 cups thinly sliced part-skim mozzarella
• You can add ham, green pepper, mushrooms etc.
(this will change the nutritional information)
Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 400F.
2. Spread spinach puree on each pita so that the spinach comes to within about 1/2
inch of the edge. Spread the sauce over the spinach; it should cover the spinach and
come within a 1/4 inch of the edge of the pita. Now lay the cheese over the sauce, cover-
ing any place where the green comes through.
3. Place the pizzas on a foil-lined baking sheet and bake until the cheese melts and begins
to brown, 5 to 10 minutes. Let the pizzas cool 5 minutes before serving so the cheese
cools and doesn't pull off.
Number of Servings: 8
When taking your children on the shopping trip, allow them to select the
vegetables, pita pockets, cheese, etc. Talk about the texture, smell, shapes etc. of
the products. Not only is the participation of the shopping important so is the
participation in the preparation of the pita pizza important. Encourage your child
to grate, chop, and spread.
All of these steps will essentially increase the chances of your child tasting this
vegetable for the first time.

Family Fun Winter Activities
Family Activities: With you family you can engage in many fun outdoor activities and snow games -- great Fun and Exercise for Everyone!!!
• Snow pile: Groups have five minutes to build the highest snow pile.
• Spoon balls: Each group is given a spoon and a snowball. One at a time, each child puts the snowball on the spoon and runs around a marker. To be particularly active, the group can continue taking turns for a specified amount of time instead of stopping after each child has gone once.
• Dog sled race: Kids can take turns being pulled by their “dog teams” around a marked course on a toboggan.
• Fill it up: Groups can fill a bucket full of snow using a scoop. See which team can fill the bucket the fastest or see which team has the most snow in their bucket after a certain period of time.
• Heart energizer: Set up a large square using some sort of marker for each corner (clothing, sticks). Each child or group of children can have a corner. Place pine cones, sticks, stones, tennis balls or some other object in the centre of the box. On the “go” signal each child runs to the centre to picking up one item at a time and returning it to their corner. Play as long as you wish and add up the objects in each corner at the end. To make this a cooper-ative game you can have all children gather the objects in one location and time them to see how fast they can do it together.
Camrose and Area Early Childhood Development Coalition
"Early childhood educators have long recognized the power of play. The significant contribution of play to young children’s development is well documented in child
psychology, anthropology, sociology, and in the theoretical frameworks of education, recreation, and communications. Being able to play is one of the key developmental tasks of
early childhood. Play is “the leading source of development in the early years”: it is essential to children’s optimal development.
