2.3 IDENTIFICATION
Categorizing belief statements according to school of thoughts
There are several kinds of philosophical beliefs which represent broad spectrum
of thoughts of what school should do, what curriculum should offer, how teacher
will teach and how students will learn. Our beliefs score will focus on five distinct
school of thoughts: perennialism, idealism, realism, experimentalism and
experientialism.
A. Compare the philosophical views of the new and seasoned teacher with your own
by checking the appropriate box/es.

STRENGTH OF BELIEF
Perennialism
Compare the results. Who among you strongly adhere (rating of 5) to
perennialism as a school of thought?
I shared the same thoughts with the two teachers that I have asked. Our
answers vary. But based on the responses, I can say that we no longer
believed in perennialism as a philosophy in education because this can be an
obsolete principle to live by. The only item that we have given 5 points is the
statement which says education is a preparation for life.

STRENGTH OF BELIEF
Idealism
Compare the results. Who among you have strong tendencies to be believers of
idealism?
I and the new teacher are believers of idealism. We believed in the
authority that the teachers have in schools. We believed that teachers have a
vital role in learning and that great responsibility is being placed upon them.
We also believed that education must focus on the subject matter however,
we do not adhere to an obsolete method of instruction.

STRENGTH OF BELIEF
Compare the results. Who among you have strong tendencies to be a realist
teacher?
Among the three of us, the new teacher is the realist. She believed that
education must be redirected to imparting knowledge that will be helpful in
carrying out real-life tasks and learning had taken place if they are manifested
in actions.

STRENGTH OF BELIEF
Experimentalism
Compare the results. Are you all experimentalist teachers? Who among you
have strong tendencies to be experimentalist?
The seasoned teacher is the experimentalist among us. Because of years
of teaching, she probably thought that education is a matter of discovering
new things that would help make the teaching-learning process more
effective. And she probably adopted the habit of problem solving and inquiry
to come up with appropriate and effective strategies in teaching.

STRENGTH OF BELIEF
Experientialism
Compare the results. Who among you are strong believers of experientialism as
a school of thought?
The seasoned teacher and I are both believers of experientialism. We
believed in teacher-student collaboration in deciding which learning contents
are appropriate. We also believed in learning by doing and practical
application of knowledge.
ROMERO SARAH B. BSED 4A (FS 6-Episode 2)
Self-reflection
B. What philosophical agreements develop among the new, seasoned teachers and
you?
The most noticeable consensus in my philosophies and the two teachers is that we
all have well-founded principles in life particularly towards the teaching
profession. We might be different with the philosophy like we are not adherents
of the same educational philosophy but we are similar in how we view teachers as
an important role in the pursuit of lifelong learning.
C. What significant differences appear among the three groups? (new teacher,
seasoned teacher and you)
We have different philosophy of education. I and the new teacher are most likely
to become adherents of idealism and realism philosophy but the seasoned teacher
is already a believer of experimentalism and experientialism. These can be seen
on the responses that we have on the belief statement survey. I must say, I still
have a lot to learn in terms of these principles.
2.4 INTERNALIZATION
Contextualizing internalized knowledge
With the present Enhanced Basic Education Curriculum (K-12), what do you
think will be the most appropriate philosophical beliefs about:
A. Education
The perennialist belief that education is a preparation for life can be used by
curriculum planners to give emphasis for lifelong learning and attainment of
long-term goals in education. The learners must acquire lifelong skills which they
can apply in the future and in the changing society that we have right now. This is
also a principle under a progressivist philosophy.
ROMERO SARAH B. BSED 4A (FS 6-Episode 2)
B. School
Schools are the place where learners spend 8 hours a day. Whatever they are
learning at school is very crucial on what they will manifest even outside the
school vicinity. They are adaptable and they easily acquire the behavior of the
people whom they spent most of their time with. Schools should be progressive
and must not be contented with what they are currently producing. Along with
the changing technology and trends, our schools must also upgrade in terms of
many aspects.
C. Curriculum
Curriculum that is existing right now is very much aligned with what our world
really needs. There are issues about whether our country is ready for the K-12
program but I personally believed that this enhanced curriculum is really what we
need to implement in order to be competent in varying fields. The curriculum
must have this vision that the graduates should be productive in different
profession or industries in the future.
D. Teachers
Teachers are highly important in learning. As future teacher, I can use multiple
educational philosophies. For instance, I can be a firm teacher like a perennialist
and essentialist teacher. At the same time I can choose to become a progressivist
and pragmatist teacher who is always looking for new ways to bring about
positive changes and growth in teaching-learning process. I can also make use of
the principles of experientialists which adhere to the idea that learners learn best
when they are doing authentic tasks. Every philosophy can contribute to our
philosophy in teaching that will soon become our philosophies in life as educators.
E. Students
Students must believe in the progressivist aspect of education that we are
always after the new innovations and creations in technology and all other aspects
of learning. Learners should keep in mind that they are responsible for their own
learning and in that way, they can do every possible effort to learn on their own
pace, in their own ways. Teachers will just be a guide and facilitator of learning but
their learning lies on their hands at the end of the day.
F. Methods of Teaching
Learners are diverse and technology is continuously improving and because of
that, we should not dwell on traditional methods of teaching. All the ideas and
ROMERO SARAH B. BSED 4A (FS 6-Episode 2)
resources are just around us and we must decide to maximize the use of those
given that they are still parallel to the learning needs and levels of the students.
2.5 DISSEMINATION
Intrinsic transfer: Formulating belief statements of a K-12 teacher
See the big picture in your career path. Think seriously about the K to 12
program as your source of Belief Statements of a K to 12 teacher. Develop your
belief statements of of a K-12 teacher.
Use the following questions to guide you in stating your belief:
A. What are schools for?
B. What subjects are of value?
C. What is an ideal K-12 teacher?
D. What should be the primary goal of a K-12 teacher?
E. What is the best way for students to learn?
➢ Schools are the second home of learners which should provide a warm
environment for learning.
➢ Education is a lifetime pursuit which should be the primary concern of the
curriculum.
➢ Teachers are molders of learner’s personalities.
➢ Teachers must live with the principle that ‘We cannot give what we don’t
have.’
➢ K-12 teachers must be technologically-competent.
➢ Learners learn best when teachers use analogy and representations about the
lessons which are more familiar with the learners.
