A punishing heat wave across the American Southwest along with extremely dry conditions and sundowner winds has spawned a number of early season wildfires in Southern California, including the Sherpa Fire in Los Padres National Forest, which has burned nearly 8,000 acres in less than a week.

Twin fires northeast of Los Angeles have forced mandatory evacuations along several coastal valleys.
