The soil condition on the eastern area of Pantai Kerachut, away from the beach, is composed mainly of laterite soil (red soil) and mud. These two soil types depend on moisture for their strength. The higher the moisture content of the soil the less compact it will be and its strength will be greatly reduce. Due to the area being a rainforest, the moisture content is high and therefore the safest and most stable form of foundation would be the pad foundation. This is because the building columns will transfer its load onto the pad footing instead of the soil. Besides that, this type of foundation requires little excavation ensuring little to no damage of the surrounding environment.

The site for the retreat is located on the mountainous area of Pantai Kerachut, Pulau Pinang. The retreat’s main concept was to merge the natural and built environment which was done through the use of single glazed UV protected tempered glass encompassed in a 0.1m X 0.1m powdered aluminium frame in most of the wall construction. The southern walls are composed of 0.2m X 0.15m X 0.1m bricks and reinforced concrete columns finished in plaster and render for texture. Supported on the RC columns and two Meranti wood logs, the roof is made out of Cemboard planks and is sloped to the south. Finally, to allow the reflection of natural light, the concrete flooring was polished as a finish.
