On behalf of BTN, it is my pleasure to welcome you and thank you
for participating in the third annual BTN Big 10K.
BTN is honored to call Chicago home and proud to have so many
Big Ten fans and alumni share the city with us today. This event
brings together all 14 Big Ten communities, in a joint effort to
celebrate both the home of the premier collegiate conference in
the country and its television network.
I would like to thank the City of Chicago for helping us make this year’s event even
bigger and better than the previous two. We are also very proud to once again have
Special Olympics Chicago as the charitable beneficiary.
From all of us at BTN, thanks for participating in this year’s BTN Big 10K. We hope
you enjoy all of the festivities, and the great programming we have in store for the
upcoming season.

conditions to event staff, participants and volunteers leading up to and on race
day. The levels range from Low (green) to Moderate (yellow) to High (red) to
Extreme (black) based on a variety of factors, including weather conditions.
All event staff, participants and volunteers should familiarize themselves with
the Event Alert System color indicators prior to the race, remain alert for di-
rections from race officials, announcers and volunteers and take precautions
to prepare for varying weather conditions on race day.
On race day, event staff, participants and volunteers should stay tuned to the
current Event Alert System status via public address announcements and
the color-coded flags at the start areas and at each of the five Aid Stations
along the course.

start Line DetaiLs10k10K Corral Staging
The 10K Start Corrals will open at 6am and 10K participants must be in their as-
signed corrals by 6:45am. 10K bibs are black with a letter/number combination. This
letter/number corresponds to the corral you are assigned to for the 10K race start.
Corrals are labeled Corral A-Corral M. You are able to move back in the corrals,
to a later letter, but you are not able to move forward. For example, if you are bib
number D4001, you will start in Corral D. If you want to run with your friend who
is seeded in Corral H, you may start in Corral H with them, but they cannot start
in Corral D with you. Corrals A through E are located on Museum Campus Drive
and Corrals F through M are located on Waldron Drive.
For those who have qualified for the Elite Start Corral, you will receive separate
instructions in your Bib Confirmation e-mail and when you pick-up your packet.
10K Race Start
The 10K start line will close once all 10K participants have crossed the Start Line. To
ensure all runners’ safety, runners arriving late to the start area will not be allowed
to participate in the 10K event, and can participate in the 5K. Spectators are not
allowed in the 10K start corral areas.
5k5K Corral Staging
The 5K Start Corrals will open at 7:30am and 5K participants must be in the start
area before the start of the race at 8:00am. 5K bibs are blue with a black number
on them. The start corrals are located on Museum Campus Drive. Participants can
move back (higher numbers) within their designated corral, but they cannot move
forward (lower numbers) or move to a different corral.
Your bib number corresponds to the corral you are assigned to for the 5K race start:
Corral 1: #1,000-1,999
Corral 2: #2,000-2,999
Corral 3: #3,000-3,999

iLLinOisAs year three of the Tim Beckman
era dawns, a 6-6 record looks doable
but it will take a lot of work. Beckman
has gone 6-18 overall and 1-15 in the
Big Ten. This season, just look at
November: at Ohio State, vs. Iowa, vs.
Penn State, and at Northwestern.
inDiana Indiana hasn’t been to a bowl game
since 2007, but they’re getting closer.
Playing in the rugged Big Ten East will
be daunting, and the Hoosiers have
just six home games. On top of that,
the Hoosiers travel to play defending
SEC East champs Missouri on Sept. 20.
iOwaIf you see Kirk Ferentz smiling a lot,
you’ll know why after looking at the
Iowa schedule. There’s a good chance
Iowa will be favored in every game.
Let me type that again: There’s a
good chance Iowa will be favored in
every game and they open with three
home games.
MaryLanDMaryland’s maiden Big Ten voyage
could hit bumpy roads. The Terps
may be favored in just one league
game in 2014 (vs Rutgers), and the
non-conference slate has games
against South Florida, Syracuse and
West Virginia. Maryland also has just
six home games.
MiChiganThere is a sense of urgency around Ann
Arbor as Brady Hoke enter his fourth
season at the helm. The schedule
offers many challenges for a program
looking for its first Big Ten title since
2004. Don’t overlook Sept. 6 and the
last scheduled meeting between the
Wolverines and Notre Dame.
MiChigan stateWhat’s in store for last year’s Rose
Bowl champs? The Spartans have lost
a number of starters but the schedule
will be an ally, as the toughest Big Ten
foes (Nebraska, Michigan, Ohio State)
all come to East Lansing. Bottom line:
The good times may keep on rolling
along in East Lansing.
BTN.com senior writer Tom Dienhart gives a sneak peek at the 2014 football schedules. Find more at BTN.com/TomDienhart.
big ten fOOtbaLL sneak Peek
23 btn big 10k
MinnesOtaJerry Kill has Minnesota improving in
each of his three seasons, going from
three, to six, to eight victories with
bowls in each of the last two seasons.
The best looks like it is yet to come.
Minnesota may be a dark horse in the
Big Ten West division.
nebraskaHopes are high in Lincoln and the
schedule makes Nebraska’s quest for
a title difficult. There are three tough
Big Ten road games: at Michigan State,
at Wisconsin and at Iowa, and the
non-conference has some challenges,
including a visit from Miami (Fla.).
nOrthwesternThe Wildcats return many key veterans
and will be motivated, but this schedule
doesn’t look to do NU any favors, as
getting to six wins may be difficult.
A challenging seven-game stretch
includes games against Nebraska,
Iowa, Michigan and finally a trip to
Notre Dame.
OhiO stateThere is a lot for Buckeye fans to like
about Ohio State’s schedule, which
includes visits from Rutgers, Illinois
and Kent State. Toughest Big Ten
game? Nov. 8 at Michigan State. Ohio
State misses all of the top teams in
the Big Ten West: Nebraska, Iowa and
Wisconsin.
Penn stateThere is much anticipation around the
unveiling of the James Franklin era. The
postseason ban remains and depth will
continue to be an issue for Franklin,
but enthusiasm and promise won’t be.
The schedule will be an ally, as it’s not
crazy to envision Penn State winning
eight games with this menu.
PurDueAs far as debuts are concerned, Darrell
Hazell endured a rough one at Purdue
at 1-11. The 2014 schedule won’t offer
much relief for Hazell and Co., so any
postseason dreams may be just that:
dreams. This is going to be a slow
rebuild process in West Lafayette.
rutgersRutgers’ first Big Ten season will be
a big challenge. There are myriad
difficult games, thanks to playing in
the rugged Big Ten East, and the cross-
division games are daunting, too, with
Nebraska and Wisconsin on the to-do
list. Bottom line: Getting to a bowl for a
fourth season in a row will be difficult.
wisCOnsinThe talented Badgers play one of the
cushiest schedules in the Big Ten, as it
misses all of the top contenders from
the Big Ten East. Bottom line: This
team will be in the hunt for another
division title, with everything likely
coming down to a key three-game
stretch to end the season.
