Protectedplanet.net harnesses the power of Web
2.0 technology used by social networking
platforms like Facebook and Twitter, bringing
protected areas to a whole new generation of
users, including policy makers and the general
public.
Protectedplanet.net features:
Protected areas’ boundaries and data from the
World Database on Protected Areas (WDPA)
Information articles from Wikipedia
Species information from the Global
Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF)
Photos from Panoramio
Google mapping technology
The World Database on Protected Areas (WDPA),
established in 1981 to catalogue the world’s
protected areas, is a collaboration between the
United Nations Environment Programme World
Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC) and
the International Union for Conservation of Nature
(IUCN).
Today the WDPA holds over 180,000 protected
areas, both terrestrial and marine, for every
country throughout the world and is the only global
dataset on protected areas.
Information comes from national governments and
conservation organisations, and now anyone can
contribute.
A protected area is defined by IUCN as:
“ A clearly defined geographical space, recognized,
dedicated and managed, through legal or other
effective means, to achieve the long termconservation of nature with associated ecosystem
services and cultural values.”
Making protected areas information available is
vital to assessing progress towards international
biodiversity targets, and improving biodiversity
conservation.
