1.INTRODUCTION A recent trend in technology is delivering 3D to the

mainstream users via TV's , PCs , Smartphone's and game consoles

The technology makes it possible to present 3D images suited to mobile environments, and gives the observer the perception that they are actually holding real objects their hand

while comparing 3D’s in TV’s and cinema we emphasis on 3D display technology in mobiles using high density directional images method...

Viewer doesn’t have to wear 3D glasses to see

natural looking 3D images

2.DEMAND FOR MOBILE 3D

The 3D could enhance the playing experience.

Sharing videos and photos with friends ranked in the top three uses of 3D cell phones in a recent survey conducted in Japan.

The ability to view movies and video content shared by users is also increasing 3D mobile device adoption

Also studios are developing 3D movies for mobile devices

This approach could work with hospitality services that

show 3D views of hotel rooms and amenities

It could also work with navigational assistance by

superimposed, high lightened 3D path through a city or

building

3.Requirements of 3D display for

mobile environment

The phenomena of the changing appearance of a 3D

objects when viewed from different positions is known as

“motion parallax” and is one of the main factors that

enables us to see 3D objects..

Motion parallax enables us appreciate texture such as

surface of water or sparkling of jewellery,

Firstly since mobile devices are usually handheld there are

physical limitations to the size of whole hardware package

Secondly in mobile usage, the viewer is close to the

display and distance and position can be easily changed

Thirdly there is a need to recreate realism and texture of

objects8

4. 3D DISPLAY METHODS

Due to screen size limitations mobile 3D displays must be

compact

The high density directional images display method

displays 3D Images to the viewer by simultaneously

displaying multiple images...

High density directional images method

This method creates motion parallax , thus enabling the

image to change depending on the angle of the viewers

head or tilt of the display

This is done by attaching lenticular lenses diagonally

across a LCD to achieve high density image in the

horizontal direction

These lenticular lens on the surface of LCD controls the

direction of light emitted from each pixel, causing light to

be visible from certain angles10

Since there are multiple pixels behind these lenticular

lenses the viewer sees different images depending on

viewing angles

High density directional image enables detailed image

display for multiple viewpoints separated by 1 degree

5.MOBILE 3D DISPLAY

PROTOTYPE AND EVALUATION

For the mobile 3D display, we use three 7.2inch,4.5inch,2.5inch sizes for LCD panels, and lenticular lenses designed for these panel specification..

LENTICULAR LENS DESIGN

The specification for three types of panel used in the

prototypes are shown in table

In case of the 7.2inch and 4.5inch panels , to achieve

smooth motion parallax , the number of directional images

was set to 30

in case of 2.5inch because of lower number of pixels the

no: of directional images is set to 24

Lenticular lenses were designed according to those

parameter settings

9.LIMITATIONS

Transparent and reflection are incorrect

Can create small cracks with depth changes

Black bars on the left and right side of the screen

Can cause much strain to eye

Costlier than conventional 3D methods.

This display is capable of displaying natural 3D images.

With further subjective experimentation and evaluation

using the prototype displays, we aim to achieve 3D

display more suitable for mobile environments...

11.CONCLUSION

Since there is a difference in viewing environments and

applications with mobile devices displays compared to

non mobile devices such as TV's and cinema which has

large display area, we design and built prototype 3D

display using the high density directional images.

The prototype display has good compatibility with

existing mobile devices.
