None of us arethe same as we were yesterday, nor will we betomorrow.”

~B.J. Neblett

habits

Virtue-based Leadership …Virtue or Habit

“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence (or virtue) is then not an act, but a habit”

~Aristotle

Virtue is a habit. What is a habit?Physiological and psychological perspectives (second nature).

1. Automatic. Instinctive response, without reflection.

2. Simplify life. Diminishes the amount of conscious attention required.

3. Emotionless. Feelings may be present, but habits do not stir up strong emotions.

4. Embedded in our Environment. We tend to do the same things in the same circumstances; we associate certain behaviors with environmental cues.

Your Leadership Purpose

• Recognize how you were socialized.

• Anchoring purpose enables you to redirect your attention toward goals and concentrate on who and what you want to be and need to learn.

• You can focus on behaving in ways that advance the purposes for which you stand.

So…like it or not…

WE HAVE TO CHANGE!

Road Map for Success… to Lead and Motivate Others

The willingness and ability of women leaders to support women’s issues is

dependent on having enough women in significant roles.

Center for American Women in Politics, Rutgers; Catalyst ; Linda Tarr-Whelan

Who Influenced You?

What leader had the most positive influence in your daily life?

What are two or three words that best describe what this person contributed to your life?

…To find your inner leader

It comes naturally to some.

To most, it’s cloaked in self-doubt and fear.

But we all have an inner leader.

Whether it be on the big stage or in the private world, as a parent, a partner, a friend, a

mentor…the power is within us.

Lindsay P, Know is the Time. 2009

Find your inner leader

Improve your skills

Test your limits

Be a coach or mentor

“A person who has confidence in themselves wins the confidence of others.” ~ Jewish proverb

…Improve your skills

Don’t retire…rewire yourself.Use your experience, but keep

it current.

Constantly build on your skills.

Challenge them.

Share them.

Grow. Lindsay P, Know is the Time. 2009

“Experience is the best teacher, but a fool will learn from no other.” ~Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790)

Find your inner leader

Improve your skills

Test your limits

Be a coach or mentor

…Test your limits

To find your real capabilities you must push through your comfort zone.

Don’t do it recklessly.Find what you think are your

boundaries, then challenge them by degrees.

When you see they’re illusions, push harder.

Lindsay P, Know is the Time. 2009

“What the mind can conceive, the mind can achieve.” ~W. Clement Stone (1902-2002)

Find your inner leader

Improve your skills

Test your limits

Be a coach or mentor

…Be a coach and mentor

This can bring unexpected benefits.

You pass on your hard-won skills and wisdom.

You receive great insight and friendship.

You become a conduit for wisdom.

You light the way for another.

In return, you see life through different eyes, and usually, you’ll learn more than you’ll teach.

Lindsay P, Know is the Time. 2009

“By learning you will teach, by teaching you will learn.” ~ a Latin proverb

…Communicate

Often the key to communication is what’s not said.Listen with your ear and your eyes.

Look where the words don’t match the meaning.Don’t fill the gaps by speaking.

Allow the speaker to do it.

Look for motivations.

You’ll be surprised at the results.Lindsay P, Know is the Time. 2009

“We have two ears and one mouth, so that we can listen twice as much as we speak.” ~ Epictetus (c 55-135)

Communicate and engage

Overcome fear

Be resilient and flexible

Find balance

…Overcome fear

Failing simply improves your chances

of succeeding next time.

You can’t make progress without failing. But fear of failure is our greatest brake:

To growth; to knowledge; to progress.

Allow yourself the possibility of failure.

Feel the liberation it brings.

Lindsay P, Know is the Time. 2009

“To conquer oneself is a greater task than conquering others.” ~Buddha (563 BC–483 BC)

Overcome fear

Be resilient and flexible

Find balance

…Be resilient and flexible

From time to time we all suffer reverses.

Sometimes they seem overwhelming

or endless.

But only if you look at them in isolation.

Thing come in cycles.

What goes around, comes around.

Bide your time. Bounce back. Lindsay P, Know is the Time. 2009

“Our greatest glory is not in never failing but in rising every time we fall.” ~Confucius (551 BC-479 BC)

Communicate and engage

Overcome fear

Be resilient and flexible

Find balance

…Find balance

Life rushes between the mundane and madness.

Contentment is often found in moderation.

Balance is elusive.

But simply seeking it allows you to avoid excesses.

Don’t make it a contest; allow things to happen naturally.

You’ll be surprised how often they center themselves, and open up vast possibilities.

Lindsay P, Know is the Time. 2009

“Be moderate in order to taste the joys of life in abundance.” ~Epicurus (341 BC – 270 BC).

“One’s philosophy is not best expressed in words; it is expressed in the choices one makes… and the

choices we make are ultimately our responsibility.”
