BPC SmartVista solution on LinuxONE and x86
BPC, in cooperation with IBM, examined database performance and financials for the SmartVista banking solution on both LinuxONE and x86 servers
Research objectives• Examine database performance on LinuxONE for a variety of SmartVista TPS use cases• Compare LinuxONE and x86 database performance for a large SmartVista workload based on
3,800 TPS• Develop a five-year cost of ownership model for the use of a LinuxONE versus x86 database for
a 3,800 TPC SmartVista solution use case

• 16 5.2 GHz LinuxONE III LT1 cores• 228 GB RAM• Bare metal RHEL 7• 1TB Flash• No z/VM® virtualizationLinuxONE testing was performed in an IBM lab
Testing on LinuxONE found a linear, scalable progression in the amount of database CPU usage as the number of TPS increased

Cost case assumptions
IBM LinuxONE / April 2021 / 98038898 / © 2021 IBM Corporation
Cost case is a comparison of database costs only (excludes all application and storage related costs)Model includes • costs for production environment only over five years (does not include Dev/Test or QA environments)• hardware purchase and maintenance for both LinuxONE and x86• purchase and maintenance costs for all required software licenses, support and service
Software assumes • 50% discount on database and management tools• 55% discount on Linux OS (RHEL)
Disaster Recovery environment• Is configured for Hot DR that achieves a one-hour recovery time objective (RTO)• Includes all production environment costs (energy, space, networking) with
– 100% x86 production hardware and software costs– LinuxONE DR package that supports charge for one IFL only of SW and discounted HW for DR

1 A five-year cost model for a 3,800 TPC BPC SmartVista use case shows that running the solution's database on IBM LinuxONE III LT2 is 54% lower than the compared x86 database environment. An IBM IT Economics five-year cost model was used to examine LinuxONE and x86 hardware, software, floor space, energy, networking and disaster recovery costs for the database of a BPC SmartVista use case. A client use case based on database transaction throughput requirements, measured in transactions per second (TPS), was analyzed using a LinuxONE III LT1 server with 16 LinuxONE cores versus 120 Ivy Bridge x86 cores. LinuxONE and x86 TPS sizing requirements used in the cost model were extrapolated for a 3,800 TPS use case on LinuxONE III LT2 and Skylake servers based on results obtained under IBM and BPC laboratory conditions on LinuxONE III LT1 and Ivy Bridge, not in an actual customer environment. Results will vary. Both cost models included U.S. pricing for Linux OS with a 55% discount, a relational database and management tools with a 50% discount, and disaster recovery support. An additional 100% of production capacity was projected for a remote site for disaster recovery. DR costs for x86 replicate production hardware and software costs. LinuxONE DR costs utilize CBU hardware pricing and include one core of software charges. LinuxONE pricing is based on U.S. prices as of April 2021 and x86 hardware pricing is based on IBM analysis of U.S. prices as of April 2021 from IDC. Floor space, networking and energy costs are based on data from IBM IT Economics assessments for clients.
