_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

1. What is the author’s purpose at the beginning of the story? At the beginning of the story the author’s purpose is to inform and give us biographical information about Jose’s early life.

2. Why do you think the author starts the story by telling about Jose’s life? I think the author begins the story with information about Jose’s life to help us understand where he came from and what he was like.

3. Why do you think Jose’s father took his son to so many different cultural events? I think Jose’s father took his son because he was a musician and he wanted to introduce Jose to different types of music, dance, and cultural events.

4. What events could make Jose feel mournful? Moving to Nogales would have made Jose feel mournful.

5. Why did Jose go to a new school? Jose went to a new school because his father got permission to move into and work in the United States.

6. What was Jose’s reaction when the other kids laughed at him? What does that tell us about his character? When the other kids laughed at him Jose cried. Then he stamped his foot and said he would learn English better than anyone else. This tells us that he is determined and wants to succeed.

8. How does Jose’s feelings about New York change over time? How do you know? His feelings start out excited and full of wonder. Then later he finds the city as more boring and depressing. I know this because at first he says the city is “shimmering” and later the city is a “jungle of stone”.

9. What text feature tells the read that Jose felt happy at the dance concert and when he danced at the dance studio for the first time? The text feature the author uses is capital letters in phrases to show excitement.

11. Why might Jose have been nervous on the night of his debut? He was probably nervous because it was the first time he had performed for an audience.

12. Why do you think the author used the sounds from Jose’s childhood to describe his dancing? I think the author used the sounds from his childhood because it showed that his childhood experiences helped him become a more creative dancer.

13. What life lesson do you think the author wants you to learn from Jose’s story? Answers may vary along the lines of: I think the author wanted me to learn a lesson about hard-work and perseverance.

14. Was this story a biography or an autobiography? How do you know? It was a biography. I know this because the author uses Jose’s name instead of saying “I”.

15. Do you think the author of this story was successful in sharing her purpose? Why or why not? I think she was successful in sharing her purpose for writing. The story was written to teach and inform.
