The Catawba River Basin is mostly in the piedmont and a little in the mountains.

Main Rivers and Tributaries etc.It flows through the Wilson Creek

Gorge, then joins the Johns River. Some large tributaries are the Johns, South Fork Catawba, Henry Fork and Jacob Fork Rivers.

3,285 square miles. 9,389 total miles of streams and rivers.

ProvisionThis basin provides for 11 different counties such as Gaston, Lincoln, Union, and Mecklenburg county.

Named after the first tribe that settled in the area.

Catawba means “people in the fork of the river”

The river provided the clay that allowed the Catawba people to become master potters

Yadkin and Pee Dee River Basin The basin is contoured in the Uwharrie Mountains.

It has played as much a role in the human settlement as the rich fertile river that come through them.

There is 5,862 total mile of streams and rivers.

There is 7,221 square miles of the river basin.

Yadkin and Pee Dee River Basin There are 21 counties within the basin.

Winston Salem, Statesville, Lexington and Salisbury are cities supported by the Yadkin River.

The Yadkin-Pee Dee River Basin bisects North Carolina, running north to south, nearly separating counties on its way.

Yadkin and Pee Dee River Basin Yadkin-Pee Dee River Basin contain some significant

remnants of the of early American civilization and the oldest cultural remains in North Carolina.

Yadkin and Pee Dee River Basin The Bald Eagle, Wood Ducks, and the Robust Redhorse are

some animals that are commonly found.

Yadkin and Pee Dee River Basin Native American cultures began settling in this region about

12,000 years ago.

The Native Americans quarried the Uwharries for Rhyolite, a strong but malleable volcanic rock that they found in abundant on the mountaintops.

It has rich lands of the mountains and piedmont of Virginia and North Carolina.

This basin enters through John H. Kerr Reservoir then flows through Lake Gaston and Roanoke Rapids Lake, then as a river downstream of Weldon.

It is 3,493 square miles

Total miles of streams and rivers is 2,213

White- tailed deer, wild turkey, and black bear are some of the animals that live there. Some are rare like red-cockaded woodpecker.

This used to be an avenue for heavy springtime runs of striped bass that lived in the ocean.

Roanoke was known as the “River of Death”, because its speed floods claimed so many lives.

There are 17 counties that get water from here.

Beauford, Bertie, Caswell, Forsyth, Granville, Guilford, Halifax, Martin, Northampton, Orange, Person, Rockingham, Stokes, Surry, Vance, Warren, and Washington.

Over 60% of the basin lies in the state of Virginia.

The basin has created fertile farmland for cotton, corn, tobacco, peanuts and soybeans.

Striped bass, also called “stripers” and “rocks” made the town of Weldon the “rockfish capital of the world”.

LocationThe Broad River starts in the mountains ofwest North Carolina and runs south eastthrough the foothills and Piedmont before it enters the South Carolina region.

basin but some popular animals include the green salamander or the crevice salamander, also the spiny catfish is a popular fish. There are also many plants within the Broad River Basin but due to run off and surface water the soil is sometimes not as fertile as it needs to be. A plant within the Broad River Basin includes a White Irisette.

100,000 acres of public and private lands.The “Bat Cave” is within the Broad River

The location of the Catawba begins on the eastern slopes of the blue ridge mountains in McDowell County. It flows east, then south into Lake Wylie on the North Carolina – South Carolina border.

White Oak• The White Oak River Basin is between the eastern

portions of the Neuse and Cape Fear river basins. This is near the coast.

• There are 4 river systems. The main is the Newport River. The New River is the most populated.

• The total miles of streams and rivers is 320 miles. • The size is 1,382 square miles. • There are 6 counties within this basin. The main

one is Jacksonville. A town that uses this water is Swansboro.

Facts:

• The bight which is in this area has unique landforms such as islands, marshes, riverine wetlands, pocosins, and many more.

• The most common plants found are carnivorous plants. Some are Venus flytrap, pitcher plants, bladderworts, butterworts and sundews.

• Other facts are that several endangered animals are found here. Also, between 1970 and 2000, the population grew about 50 percent.

◦ The river basin consist of 30 species of rare aquatic animals and two of those 30 are federally listed to be endangered species.

◦ The Carolina Heelsplitter is a type of muscle that is only found in 10 places and one happens to be in the basins Goose Creek.
