“Letters to my father from a friend. I met him once as a child. He spoke no English. I think he came from Cuba. The script and drawings always fascinated me.”
Sometimes called the Florida version of the New Orleans Mardi Gras, the festival celebrates the apocryphal legend of Jose Gaspar, a mythical Spanish pirate captain who prowled the waters of Tampa Bay, Florida.
Adopting the nickname Gasparilla, Gaspar is credited with capturing over 400 ships from 1789 to 1821 and burying treasure in numerous places throughout the west coast of Florida.
