Biology 14 Library Research: An Evolving Collaboration

What are the outcomes?Students learn information literacy skills

through a self-paced, self-scheduled environment.

Students work is graded, making it worth their effort and establishing this library research assignment’s importance.

Biology 14 Library Research: An Evolving Collaboration

What are the outcomes?Information literacy skills are integrated

into a traditional lab-based biology course.Biology teaching assistants and instructors

are taught the importance of information literacy pedagogy.

Biology 14 Library Research: An Evolving Collaboration

What are the outcomes?Tisch Library’s resources are better used.Further outreach and collaboration with the

Biology Department.

Biology 14 Library Research: An Evolving Collaboration

Outreach and CollaborationBiology 14 was the foundation for “The

Biologist's Guide to Library Resources”

Biology 14 Library Research: An Evolving Collaboration

Outreach and CollaborationHave worked with 15/21 Biology faculty

to teach information literacy skills and research resources to their classes.

Steady increase in number of Biology course library sessions.

Outreach and CollaborationAssist Biology graduate students.Library web site is linked from the Biology

department web site, as well as from a few of the professors laboratory sites.

Future Goals and Challenges Interactivity: web-based quizzes/assignment;

BLOG technology; Robo demos?Assignments are open-ended and designed to

uncover student’s interests…how to change, yet maintain this important aspect.

Continue to assess/evaluate, but bring the student survey to the web; maybe make it mandatory?

Biology 14 Library Research: An Evolving Collaboration

Future Goals and ChallengesIntegrate with Blackboard? Roving reference…good possibility.Investigate integration with Triple III’s

Millennium, Metafind and Web Bridge.
