ARLINGTONARLINGTON

This kitchen renovation in Arlington features solvent-free water-based fi nishes and natural cherry hardwood cabinets. The cherry hardwood is sourced from mills in Pennsylvania.

Our millwork shop, Clever Green Cabinets manufactured this period accurate kitchen for an 18th century Federal Style Beacon Hill condo. The kitchen cabinets were built of birds’ eye maple and cherry hard-wood, sourced from Pennsylvania. The backsplash tile was made of recycled glass; and the countertop was locally quarried green slate. We also replicated historic crown to complete the traditional aesthetic of the interior. This Beacon Hill project was a condo-wide renovation, with custom made kitchen cabinetry from Clever Green Cabinets. The goal was to implement energy effi ciency improvement measures that comply with the Historic Commission’s directives. We installed a high-effi ciency boiler, added blown-in-cellulose insulation in the existing exterior wall cavities and restored the single pane win-dows with new weather stripping to improve comfort and control air infi ltration. This bathroom renovation was a classic “While you’re here ...”. While weatherizing and insulating the home, the clients decided to have us remodel an aging bathroom for them as well.

This Winchester bathroom features a hand-made and hand-painted bathroom vanity with an integrated pull-out step stool at the bottom. The vanity features hand-sten-ciled and lacquer painted doors made by Clever Green Cabinets.

DORCHESTERDORCHESTER

One of our largest Deep Energy Retrofi t projects for the National Grid pilot program, this beatiful 1890 Victorian home was badly neglected, but remarkably, most of the “tigered” oak interior stair, wainscot and crown moulding details were still intact. The rest of the interior was gut-ted for new systems, walls, fi nishes and insulation. The “super-insulated” shell (R40 walls/fl oors, R60 roof, triple pane R5 windows) and meticulous air sealing make for a comfortable, healthy, high performance living space.Balanced heat-recovery ventilation provide superior air quality and the mechanical systems operate on ultra-low settings to maintain thermal comfort at all times.

This project in Arlington began as a bungalow with a tiny attic with no space to expand into. We demolished the roof and added a fi nished second fl oor with master suite and guest bedrooms. We also did a comprehesive foam insulation job on the second fl oor.

This project in Cambridge was a partial Deep Energy Retrofi t. This mid-nineteenth century historic home had an addition constructed approximately 80 years ago, that lacked over-hangs and had suffered signifi cant ice dam damage due to poorly executed roof and insulation details over time. It was a good opportunity to improve the performance and address the deferrred maintenance, while being respectful of the aesthet-ics.We added an air barrier and 4” of rigid foam insulation to the exterior and roof, nearly tripling the insulation value. We also replaced the water damaged large sliding door/curtain wall window system with high performance units, manufactured locally, employing imported German hardware. The siding material is cement board. The addition now stands to face the next centuries with su-perb comfort, long lasting value and it’s architectural legacy intact.

CAMBRIDGECAMBRIDGE

This project in Cambridge was a 19th century Vic-torian Carriage house that was converted into a single family home. We restored the period details and exposed much of the original timber frame while improving air tightness and insulation values of the envelope. We also upgraded the mechanical systems to a 95% effi cient system and recycled 85% of our construction waste.

We demolished a 750 sft 2-story South Boston row house to build a 1200 sft 4-story contemporary high-performance home. A well insu-lated enclosure, high quality windows, effi cient mechanical systems and solar thermal system to provide heat and hot water all contribute to the low utility bills. BROOKLINEBROOKLINE

This partial renovation and addition on a tree lined street in Brookline was a great opportunity to work in a contemporary medium that provides the family with much needed growing room, while adding almost no additional net energy load to the existing mechanical systems due to the high performance of the enclosure.
