Bellringer

• 7-10 minutes:

• Review Characteristics of Life.

• Quietly quiz each other.

Predator-PreyIn a predator-prey relationship one

organism benefits and the other is killed.

Predator-Prey Cycle

Prey Population = Predator Population

More predators = more prey eaten

Prey Population Goes = Predator Population Goes

Less predators = less prey they eat

Predator: hunts: wolfPrey: hunted: rabbit

Lab Report

• 1. Title for your Experiment

• 2. Hypothesis: Write your hypothesis (If, then) format

• 3. Materials: List materials: Include amounts

• 4. Procedure: List steps

• 5. Data Table: Label with Dates, Day number observed, Quantitative Data, Qualitative Data

Nutrition and Energy Flow

Goal 5

1. What is the source of all of the energy in this ecosystem?

2. What path (through what organisms) does the energy take to get to the hawk?

Focus Question

How Organisms Obtain Energy

• Autotrophs= Plants= Producers: make their own food through photosynthesis.

• Use energy from the sun through the process of photosynthesis to make sugar

• Heterotrophs=consumers

• Animals, Fungus, Bacteria, Protist

• Consume others to obtain energy

• Carnivores= eat meat

• Herbivores= eat plants

• Omnivores= eat plants and meat

• Decomposers= break down dead/decaying organisms

Source of All Energy

• The sun is the source of all energy.

• The energy flows from the sun, to producers, to consumers.

• Food Chain– Single path as

animals eat each other

– Autotroph to heterotroph to decomposers

• Food Web– MANY

interconnected food chains

– More realistic

Food Chain vs. Food Web• Real life not as simple as a food chain

Trophic Levels

• Producers are at the bottom

• Herbivores: 1st level consumers

• Carnivores and Omnivores: 2nd and above consumers

• Decomposers: All levels

Energy Pyramid

Only 10% of the energy from each level is transferred to the next level.

Energy is lost for movement and life processes

Biomass Pyramid

Biomass is greatest in producers. The mass is highest in producers

Pyramid of BiomassShows mass that is required to support level above

Number Pyramid

The number of individual organisms is highest in producers and steadily decreases

Summary of Trophic Levels

and Energy Flow:
