ELEMENTS AND PRINCIPALS OF

DESIGN

Unit 4 – Clothing and Textiles

ILLUSIONS

An Illusion is an image that fools the eye. Illusions can minimize or hide certain physical features by leading the eye in a specific direction.

LINES

The stripes and on a sweater , a scoop neckline

on a T-shirt, and the seams o your jeans are

examples of lines. As you look at a line, you eye

tends to follow it’s direction.

VERTICAL LINES

Vertical line leads your eye up and down,

communicating a sense of strength. An unbroken vertical line can give the illusion of more height

and less width.

HORIZONTAL LINES

Horizontal lines lead your head from side to side creating an illusion of width.

DIAGONAL OR SLANTED LINES

Diagonal or slanted lines

suggest excitement and

movement.

STRAIGHT LINES

Straight lines suggest a crisp,

more formal look…

CURVED LINES

…while curved lines create a softer effect.

SILHOUETTE

The shape or form created when lines

are combined is called silhouette.

SHAPE

A garment may have more than on shape, but most can

be categorized in one of those four shapes.

A natural shape follows the body’s outline and emphasizes the natural waistline.

In the bell shape, vertical and horizontal lines are combined.

SHAPE

A tubular shape is rectangle. This shape can make the wearer appear taller and slimmer.

A full shape make the body appear larger because it has more horizontal and curved lies than the other shapes.

SPACE

The are with in a garment or outfit is called space. Space can be divided by

seams buttons, pickets trim or accessories.

Imagine a simple black dress with a high neckline and no waistband. Now imagine the same dress with large patch

pockets and white belt, These features would divide the space in different areas, resulting in a different look.

TEXTURE

The way fabric looks and feels is it’s texture. Causal

clothing often uses denim, corduroy and bulky wools which

differ from the smooth feel of the silk, satin,

and fine wools used in the formal wear.
