Bell Ringer 10/21

Draw a picture to illustrate the vocabulary word empire. Be prepared to explain your drawing.

Ancient Egypt & Kusk Essential Vocab Activity

Steps 1-6As you would probably expect, the steps have to be completed in order.

Step #1 must be completed before step #2

Step #2 must be completed before step #3

Finish this sentence, step #3 ______________

Step #1 “Connect Two”

Write a sentence that uses TWO of the vocabulary words

Sentence needs to be an accurate statement not just a random statement

One sentence counts for two words

Sumerian Example

Polytheistic Sumerians worshipped in the ziggurat.

Let me go ahead and say NO to this before you try it

Two vocabulary words for Sumer are polytheism and ziggurats.

Give it a shot

For the next 10 minutes try to connect as many of these together as you are able to do

If you think you know the word but not sure if you are using it correctly just go with it.

TRY!

Step #2 Textbook Definition

Define each word using pages 39-72

Don’t use the glossary!

Reading the word in context will make the rest of the steps much easier

10 minutes to complete what you can

Step #3 My Definition

EXPLAIN the definition in your own words

I don’t want to read the textbook definition again

Step #3 Continued

Attempt to include “you” and “something” or “someone”; this helps you apply the new word in familiar situations

Example using the word polytheism: “If you are polytheistic you are someone who believes in more than one god. My family and I believe in only one so we are monotheistic.

What other step would what is written above fit?

Take 10 minutes to write your own definition

Step #4: Evaluate “Connect Two”

Now that you know what the words mean, evaluate your connect two sentences.

Are they used properly?

If YES put a Y in the box if NO put a N

Take a minute to do so

Step #5: Explanation and New Sentence

If you put a Y in step # 4 prove so in an explanation

If you put a N in step #4 create a new sentence that ties two vocabulary words together

Take 10

Step #6: Clue

Create a picture, riddle, mnemonic device, or synonym to help you remember the meaning of the word

Once you have done so for all of the vocabulary words you are finished!
