The Explorers

Vasco da GamaPortuguese explorer who discovered an ocean route from Portugal to

India around the Cape of Good Hope (Africa). This voyage gave Portugal a direct route to India.

Amerigo VespucciBorn in Italy in 1454, he was one of the first explorers to think that the places he had visited were not part of Asia (as Columbus thought), but

rather a New World. He sailed for Portugal.

Treaty of Tordesillas• A line that was agreed upon

by the Spanish and Portuguese to clear up any confusion on the newly claimed land in the New World.

• Spain had control of territories to the West, Portugal had territories to the East.

Ferdinand MagellanLed the first European expedition to circumnavigate the globe. Died in

1521 and Elcano took over the voyage. (See * on map for where Magellan died.) Through this expedition, Spain claimed the Philippines.

Jacques CartierFrench explorer who led three expeditions to Canada in 1535.

Sir Francis DrakeBritish Explorer who led second expedition to sail around the globe (1577-1580). He also led the English fleet to defeat the

The process of Exploration to Colonization

Explorers Conquistadors Missionaries Settlers

Colonies• Europeans competed to

make money and get glory.• Europeans wanted colonies

for their resources and as markets to sell products.

• Colony = settlement ruled by a parent country.

MercantilismMercantilism:

– Belief that wealth equals power– Countries want colonies to get wealth– Wealth is measured by gold and silver– Colonies exist to serve parent country– Spain takes a lot of gold (bullion) from the New

World.
