1) Reading: Introduction

I am Mauro.

I am a student.

I am handsome.

I am twenty-six years old.

I am from New York.

I live in an apartment.

I live in the city.

2) Grammar: “To be” verbs

"Be" verbs indicate a state of being. Like all verbs, we need to make sure the right form of the verb is being used. Below is a table of the different forms of the verb “-to be” with different subjects.

Singular Plural

I am... We are...

You are... You all are...

He/She/It is... They are...

2) Grammar: “To be” verbs

I ___ a student.

I ___ fast.

She ___ a model.

He ___ amazing.

He ___ a software engineer.

It ___ warm.

We ___ done.

2) Grammar: “To be” verbs

I am a student.

I am fast.

She is a model.

He is amazing.

He is a software engineer.

It is warm.

We are done.

3) Speaking Phrase: I’m

“I’m" is an abbreviation for the word “I am.” I can be used in many different situations to describe your own characteristics or things that you are doing.

Examples:

• I'm tired.

• I'm confused.

• I'm tall.

• I'm twenty six years old.

• I'm at work.

• I'm hungry.

• I'm from Utah.

3) Speaking Phrase: I’m

You can also add descriptive words with “I’m” such as:

• I'm terribly hungry.

• I'm extremely tired.

• I'm very happy.

• I'm very nervous.

• I am super excited.

4) Conversation: Catching Up with a Friend

Ben: I just talked on the phone for over an hour.

Josh: Who were you talking with for an hour?

Ben: My friend Sam from college.

Josh: When is the last time you talked to him?

Ben: Not since our college graduation!

Josh: Wow! That was almost 6 years ago!

Ben: Yeah, we had a lot of catching up to do.

5) Topic: Greeting

There are many ways to greet people depending on where you are and who you are with. We will discuss a few ways to greet others in this lesson. If you have a specific scenario in mind, feel free to ask.

Greeting someone you’ve never met:

Mauro: Hi, my name is Mauro. It's nice to meet you.

Josh: It's a pleasure to meet you. I'm Josh.

5) Topic: Greeting

Another common question to ask is:

Josh: What do you do for a living?

You can respond to this question by saying:

Mauro: I work at HaLLo.

Mauro: I work at a restaurant.

Mauro: I work for a software company.

Mauro: I'm an accountant.
