DRAINAGE BELOW GROUND

GUIDANCE

The below-ground drainage system should comprise the minimum pipework necessary tocarry foul water away from a building in an effective and healthy manner.

It is necessary to ensure that the sewage system is adequately protected against theemission of noxious fumes and the introduction of explosive mixtures. All sanitary appliancesshould be fitted with an adequate water seal to prevent fumes from the drainage systementering the building. The fumes in foul water systems contain many chemicals, which canresult in a potentially lethal mixture when combined. Typical chemicals found include: Hydrogen sulphide Carbon monoxide Carbon dioxide MethaneFurthermore, it is vital to check that the calculated effluent outflow can be accommodatedwithout the possibility of the drainage system flooding as a result of sewer surcharge. The surfacewater flow component can be calculated in accordance with BS EN 12056 Gravity drainagesystems inside buildings.
