Dear Music Educators:
It gives me great pleasure to introduce and welcome you to Banddirector.com’s Product & Resource Directory. This listing of music industry company information is designed to serve as a way for you to research information on products and services designed to support you in your role as a music educator.
I have worked with Banddirector.com since its beginning and I assure you that their efforts focus on supporting you, the music teacher, by providing concerts, instructional videos, and educational resources all on the Banddirector.com website.
As a music teacher myself, I have always recognized the important role the music industry plays in making me a better teacher. I appreciate knowing about new instruments, equipment, or products that might fit the needs of my program or better yet, the needs of one of my students. I am always anxious to learn about new music publications so that I can review them and determine if it is appropriate to perform with one of my ensembles.
I am also encouraged to know that an entire “support network” of ancillary companies exist to help me raise money, arrange for lifetime experiences for my students, or to help me keep my ensembles looking professional. These companies allow me to focus on my primary duties of teaching students about music, and support me in helping me realize the vision I have for my program.
Please take a moment and review the Banddirector.com Product & Resource Directory and best wishes in making great music with your students.
Sincerely,
Charles T. Menghini, D.M.A. President

PRODUCT AND RESOURCE DIRECTORY 18 FUNDRAISING
12 School Band and Orchestra, February 2011
tricts will have in the future, especially, if there is a need for a specialized instructor in an area where they have no one to fi ll it. Many districts have a huge investment in their music programs, and, let’s face it, many bands are built around their direc-tors, which means those shoes are often very hard to fi ll.
My dad retired as a band director at age 57, but immediately went back to work for a private high school. He con-tinued to teach high school band until he was 72. I’m only 58, and he keeps jok-ingly reminding me I still have 14 years to go to keep up with him. That’s a long time! However, teaching part-time, do-ing exactly what I want to do, may be just the plan to allow me to equal or beat his career – in terms of longevity. Of course, the school might not want me that long, but you can’t always have everything.
So why do I continue to teach? I con-tinue because teaching is my passion. I ac-tually like my job. I guess this makes band both a hobby and a job. I love helping kids create music. The biggest high I get is when those same kids are able to perform at a level well beyond what they ever imagined. I have received many compli-ments about my passion and dedication for teaching throughout my career, and I just pray people will continue to say simi-lar things in the future, as I continue to teach my “semi-retired” 2.5-hour school day. I’m one of those semi-retired band directors, and loving every minute I con-tinue to be allowed on the podium. And, oh, by the way, I’m taking my bands back to China for their fourth concert tour next year. Apparently retirement doesn’t mean you have to stop.
D.L Johnson is the director of Bands at North Monterey County High School in Castroville, Calif. He has taken school ensembles to perform in China, Italy, Canada, several states throughout the U.S., for the Dedication of the WWII Memorial in 2004, and for the Inaugural Parade for William Jefferson Clinton in 1997. Throughout his career, Mr. Johnson has served edu-cation in several capacities, including president of the California Association for Music Education. This is his 37th year in music education.

New Marching Band movie, “The Sound of Perfection,” in Production
A new movie about the improbable rise to success of Georgia high school band director Bob Barr and his students is currently in production. This major motion picture is based on a true story and its producers
hope to “inspire many of our future musicians and keep the spotlight burning brightly on the critical need for music education,” as well as using proceeds from the fi lm to, “set up a foundation that will raise millions of dollars and help stem the epidemic of school music department cuts across the country.”

El Sistema USA to split with NECIt appears that El Sistema USA, the program which aims to bring to the
United States the socially uplifting music education movement founded and successfully implemented in Venezuela, is looking for a new home. The proj-ect has been housed for the last two years at the New England Conserva-tory in Boston, Mass., and spearheaded by Mark Churchill, a retired dean of the youth and extension division of the NEC. However, recent votes by the Conservatory’s administration to deny a request for increased funding and staffi ng have led El Sistema USA to begin hunting for a new place to establish its nationwide headquarters.
The NEC will continue to offer a graduate training program for future lead-ers of music education programs, called the Abreu Fellows program, named after El Sistema founder José Antonio Abreu.

School Band and Orchestra, February 2011 11
Another factor leading to the encour-agement of semi-retired teachers sticking around is the new credential laws that have been enacted in many states. These stipulate that all teachers must be creden-tialed in all subject areas they teach. This has negatively impacted small schools, in particular: where are they going to fi nd these multi-subject credentialed high school band directors who can teach a 150-piece band program and are cre-dentialed to fi ll out their day teaching Health, Drivers Ed, PE, and so on? Also, what educators would be that excited about teaching music part-time as their full-time job?
The above problem is not just for music teachers; it also extends into other areas of specialized education, such as vocational subjects and technical arts. A principal fi nds this fantastic teacher to instruct an Auto Class, but only offers four classes. Now that same principal has to fi nd something else for this person to teach to fi ll out the workday, but fi nds they cannot legally teach anything else. The answer might be bringing semi-re-
tired teachers back to work, as they don’t usually require all of the schedule-fi ller and related credentials.
Aside from the opportunity to keep some income for the director and de-mand for specialized educators in some school districts, there are other reasons why some retired teachers might keep on teaching. Could it be that they actu-ally love teaching and are not ready to quit? Not only do they have the passion to keep teaching, but many of these edu-cators truly believe that what they are teaching is good for kids. I know this be-cause I’m one of them.
I had to slow down a couple of years ago for health reasons, but I didn’t want to quit teaching band. Over the years, I had created a “band monster” that was beginning to overwhelm me, as I was also teaching a full day’s schedule of classes. Perhaps that’s a part of the competitive-ness that we as band directors put on ourselves – we want to see our bands im-prove year after year. Once I retired and began teaching only my jazz band and the large band (marching band in the fall and
wind ensemble in the spring), 2.5 hours a day (plus donated time), my enjoyment of teaching skyrocketed and my health improved. Now I can’t wait to start teach-ing every morning. Whatever I give extra to the day is my decision. What I work on is what I want to work on: band and only band. I’m drawing retirement and making a small salary at the same time. Although, I have to admit that I give back many voluntary hours a day, but that’s my decision. I can do what I enjoy doing the most, which is conduct music. When parents, students, teachers, or administra-tors let me know that they feel fortunate that I am still teaching their bands, I tell them how fortunate I feel I can keep con-ducting their band. I’m the one who truly feels fortunate to still be there working with the best kids in world.
I have noticed that there seem to be fewer college-bound students going into education. Unfortunately, I can’t blame them. Everything they see and hear indi-cates this may not be a good profession to enter into right now. Hiring retired teachers may be the only choice some dis-

With more than 40 years of history and success, Evans Drumheads, the pioneer of drumhead manufacturing and design, have set the tone for today’s drumhead manufac-turers.
Evans was the fi rst to use polyester fi lm to form a drumhead, succeeding in creating a weatherproof head, and ultimately chang-ing drumhead manufacturing forever. Today, Evans’ success is built around successful lines including the award-winning G-Plus, EMAD, Genera, Hydraulic, Resonant, ST, Power Cen-ter, Rock AF, Hazy, EQ Bass Drum System, Conga and Timbale, MX Marching, Strata, and Timpani heads.
A full line of drum accessories including the EQ Pad, RGS Pad, EQ Bass Drum Patches, E-Rings (tone control rings), Staccato Disk, X-Treme Patch, and tuning keys (magnetic, ratchet, torque, bit keys).
The superb sound of the heads have made Evans the head of choice for boutique drum buildiers such as GMS, Spaun, Maryland, and MRP. Manufacturers like Gretsch, Tama, Ziljidian, Ludwig, and Vic Firth have also se-lected Evans heads as original equipment for many of their kits.

I’ve never had reeds as immediately playable, especially in the altissimo. I thank you for the reeds and the eort in developing them. I look forward to becoming an Eastman Reeds user.Donald Sinta (Professor of Saxophone, University of Michigan)

IF MUSIC IS THE BEST PART OF YOUR LIFE, THEN MAKE A CAREER OUT OF IT. TEACH MUSIC.www.vandercook.edu
Some things can only be learned in person. Sometimes, a suggestion from a classmate, a tip from an instructor, or an illuminating moment from a demonstration can be the most important thing you take home from a class. Teachers know this is true, which is why they come to VanderCook.
SUMMER GRADUATE DEGREE PROGRAM:Practical, affordable, and comprehensive: when seeking a master of music education degree, teachers choose VanderCook. Designed for the working music teacher, this program allows you to complete your degree over 3-4 summer sessions.
UNDERGRADUATE DEGREE PROGRAM:If making music has been the best part of your life so far, why not turn your passion into a profession as a music teacher? If you are thinking about teaching or know a student who could be a great music teacher, contact us today about visiting the college and seeing if VanderCook is right for you.
MECA CONTINUING EDUCATION:Continuing education courses at VanderCook are about more than just earning graduate credit. You will take away new strategies and concepts, returning to your students with renewed passion. Join us for our fall, spring, and summer programs, featuring online and in-person couses for band, choral, general music, and string teachers.
GET IN TOUCH:
“ I already knew what to teach, but it wasn’t until I came to VanderCook that I realized how much I had to learn about HOW to teach it. I would recommend this program to anyone.”
