GENERAL MANAGER’S CORNER
MEMBERSHIP MEMOS
It takes a village to raise a child is a phrase that I have been thinking of since the middle of March. Meaning, it takes a community working together for a family to stay together. It takes us learning from the wisdom of our elders, friends, and family. It also reminds me of the Avila community during the last three months. The entire community working together, doing more with less and ultimately keeping everyone feeling safe and comfortable during exceedingly difficult times. The term unprecedented times has been used the most over the past three months. As we head into summer and the slow movement to the “new normal” I wanted to offer my thanks and appreciation to you, our Avila members, for making the daily new normal for me and my team feel so appreciated, safe and comfortable. I can only hope that we have done the same for you.
Congratulations to the Class of 2020! As you head into the next chapter of your career, I want to wish all of our Avila graduating seniors the absolute best of luck. I feel like I have known most of you for the majority of your life, because I have and could not be prouder! Enjoy your summer, celebrate your successes, and experience your next chapter with the utmost of confidence and passion.
As we start the summer of 2020, we will continue to offer new and creative ways of offering amenities to you and your family while staying within guidelines to maximize the safety of all. The Fitness Center, Pool Pavilion and Restaurants will continue to expand their operations throughout the summer and the most important guideline that we ask of our membership is to make reservations during the reopening phases of Avila. This gives us the ability to serve our members and prepare for the next service levels. Avila is allowing Immediate Family guest access for our membership starting June 2nd with hopes to expand guest privileges at a later time.
On a sad note, I would like to wish the best of luck to two Avila Managers who will be leaving us in July. Sandy Sestok, Controller, is retiring after thirty-three (33) years of service at Avila Golf and Country Club. Sandy has been an incredible asset one of the hardest working and organized individuals I have ever had the pleasure of working alongside in my career in the service industry. Avila is also saying good luck to Golf Course Superintendent Mike Slack who has accepted the position as Superintendent at the Island Country Club in Marco Island. Mike has been the Golf Course Superintendent for nearly ten years, and we wish him the best as he takes the next big step in what will be an extraordinarily successful career. Mike was incredible to work with and will forever appreciate everything he has done for Avila and the success of the golf course. Although the two are leaving Avila they will always be connected with us and always part of our team.
Stay safe, enjoy the summer, and thank you as always for your support.

COACH’S CORNER
As we get into the summer months and our course closes for maintenance, it is a great time to reassess your golf game and put together a summer practice plan. Here is an example of a plan that I will do with a college player that I coach, which will address specific weaknesses in his game from last season:
Putting Stations: We will have two short putting stations and an 18-hole game that has a point system and goal.
Short Range: The player must land 8 balls on each of our greens in the short range. During the practice, I will provide feedback on the Trackman monitor with yardage, spin rate and launch angle.
Driving Range: We will select a target that is approximately half the width of a normal fairway. The player will then hit two sets of 10 with the driver and 3W. We will keep track of how many fairways are hit and look at Trackman data if necessary. (This practice plan usually takes us approximately 90 minutes to complete)
Good luck to our Avila tournament players as they return to action this summer. The major junior tours in Florida have resumed and the LPGA and PGA Tours will be back in June with a revised schedule. It has been great to see how hard these players have been working over the past couple months!

FROM THE TENNIS COURTS
Tennis Tip – Practice WallThe practice wall can be a great partner for anyone, but specially if you would like to practice your volleys and reflex volleys. According to how close you get to the wall; you can volley at a very fast or slow pace. The wall will force you to stay on your toes if you want to succeed. It will also force you to keep your racquet in front of you instead of taking it back. Start at a slow pace and increase your speed as you feel more comfortable. Give it a shot. You will like it!

2020 Men’s Club Championship March 7-8, 2020*
Championship Flight, Gross & Net (Gold Tee)
Gross Champion: Chet Ghioto 74-73 147
Gross Runner Up: Brian Keenan 76-77 153
Net Champion: Ned Eddy 70-69 139
Net Runner Up: George Brant 72-69 141
*Indicates the last newsletter was improperly printed. These are the proper results, and congratulations to Chet Ghioto. Sorry for the confusion!
March 31st, Gary Koch made his 19th career Hole in One! It was on #8 from the gold tees, and Tom Johnson, Doug Lacrosse, Dave Hasselbach, and Dan Bergin all were witnesses. It gets better with this group. Johnson and Lacrosse made aces as well in back to back to back weeks to go along with Gary’s. Johnson made his on #5. Lacrosse made his on 17 in route to 68. If Lacrosse had not bogeyed 18, he also would have shot his age of 67. This was 3 consecutive weeks with the same group. Super cool!
On April 3rd, Anne Stafford holed out on #4 for an eagle 3! She was 118 yards, and Mary Snow and Dede Rappaport were all there to congratulate! Not long after on April 22nd, Mary Snow eagled #3 with a 9-iron and then birdied #5! Ann Rudolph, Debbie Ferguson, and Laurie Kavanagh were there for that one!
Fran Curci made an ace playing alongside Sol Fleischman. It was on #5 and he used a 9-iron! The date was April 10th and one he will remember…….unlike his cell phone which he leaves everywhere!
Mark Cooper was playing on April 4th with Jim Goodchild, Joe McGee, and Tom Paradise. He had a perfect ace on #5 from 110 yards. Nice 1!
Francesco Ruffino also aced #5 on April 11th. He hit a SW from 106 yards, and Kris Saba was with him. Incidentally, Francesco also currently holds the course record of 63 from the Gold tees. He shot that sometime in mid-April with 8 birdies.
Mackenzie Puryear surprisingly had what was just her 1st hole in one on April 19th. It was hole #5 in the company of Elizabeth Szokol. I am sure this will be the 1st of many in her career!
Gregg Smith has shot his age for 15 consecutive years! Since he was 69 in fact. He is now 84 and has shot his age twice this year including April 25th and May 3rd. Let’s go for 15 more Mr. Smith!
Richard Rudolph hit a 6-iron in the jar on #14 from 153 yards. It was on Cinco de Mayo, and he immediately got everyone drunk on Margarita’s. I’m kidding about the Margarita’s, but it was still a great ACE!
I think having this many Feats is, in itself, a Fantastic Feat. I also think it is because so many of you are playing so much more golf. I’m very proud of our membership!

FROM THE PRO
TURF TALK
If there is one positive thing that can be taken from the circumstances of the past couple of months, it is the Avila community and Club have been brought together closer than ever. Members who did not know each other prior to COVID-19 are now golfing together, and many more children of golfers have now gotten involved in the game. It has been wonderful to see the camaraderie between members and their families. Over my 12 years serving Avila, I have never known our membership better.
We have added a few summer events to the calendar, but as we go to press, we are not yet sure if we will be able to proceed with them. We are prepared to get back into tournament mindset when the timing is right, including our majors. I still hope we can reschedule the 2020 Los Caballeros de Avila, so please keep November 5-8 open if you are in the field. Technically, that is the date of the Invitational de Avila, but there is a chance Los Cab may replace the Invitational this year. If not, the Invitation will be played as scheduled. We will keep you posted with updates.
As I have said to many of the members, it’s Groundhog Day every day at Avila!
Chris SlatteryHead Golf Professional
I mentioned in my last newsletter article that I would be going over some work that will be performed during our June closure. I’m sure you have seen the areas on 9 and 11 fairways that have been sprayed out--this was in preparation for the forthcoming work. I’ve detailed below a more comprehensive look at what will be done to remedy the issues.
The problem areas on 9 and 11 stem from the regrowth of Common Bermuda. Common Bermuda is exactly as it sounds; it’s the most basic form of Bermuda grass but it does not have the traits that golf course managers look for in grass selection. Simply put, it does not have the ability to hold up to the cart traffic, cold weather, and low light that are common during the winter months. This is a common issue for golf courses in Florida and that’s why you see resurfacing taking place from time to time. For us, we wanted to completely remove any Common Bermuda and started to spray in April.
The first step to removing Common Bermuda is to perform 3 sprays of herbicide, 3 weeks apart to get a good kill of the existing grass. Once there is a good vegetation kill, the fairway will be tilled in prep for a soil sterilant. This will take care of any grass that may have survived the sprays. After the wait time of 14 days, the fairway will be returned to its original design and prepped for sod. Once the sod has knitted in, the fairway will be opened. It will be a faster grown in of a few weeks vs a few months with sprigs.
As always, I look forward to seeing you on the golf course and if you have any additional questions please email at mslack@avilagolf.com
