• Students will discuss Australian life and their culture, and be able to cite important facts in both.

Activities

• Students will create a collage with a given territory, using materials that are supplied by the teacher. (magazines, paper, & markers)

• Given a certain territory, the students will find a book and do a report on what they have learned.

• Students will get into groups and create a skit with the information they gather to help the other students learn.

• Given a map of Australia, the students will use colored pencils and color each territory.

• Students will complete a crossword puzzle which is based on the Aussie vocabulary.

• A word search will be given to the students with important vocabulary terms for this unit.

• Ayers Rock- The single largest rock in the world, over 1 ½ miles wide.

Southern Australia

• Capital city: Adelaide

• Major Industries– Wine– Wheat– Wool– Shipbuilding

Queensland

• Capital city: Brisbane

• Major Industries– Rubber– Coffee

New South Wales

• Capital city: Sydney

• 1st state/territory to be established

Victoria

• Driest Continent of all• Most interior rivers only flow after heavy

rain.• Great Dividing Range contains most of the

forests.• Northern temperature 75-85 degrees F• Interior – hot days, cool nights• South – below 45 degrees F

Plant Life

• Unique plant life due to isolation from other land masses.

• Eucalyptus/Gum trees, over 500 species can be found growing in all parts but the dry desert.

Animal Life

• Marsupials -animals that carry their young in a pouch.– Koala– Wallaby– Kangaroo
