Audition Requirements

Auditions for the 2019-20 season will be held on May 18 and 25, 2019 at Furman University. Audition applications and other information about the CYS Organization can be found at www.carolinayouthsymphony.org

Auditions for Carolina Youth Symphony Orchestras will include these 4 components:

Repertory Orchestra Concert Orchestra Symphony Orchestra 1. Scales performed by memory demonstrating good tone, pitch andrhythm

Woodwind, Brass, Mallets: Concert Pitch G, C, F, B flat, E flat, A flat, D flat Major Scales

Strings: C, F, B flat, G, D 2 octave Major Scales (1 octave for bass)

Woodwind, Brass, Mallets: All 12 major scales- multiple octaves preferred when possible Strings: Major scales up to 4 sharps and 4 flats performed in 3 octaves (2 octaves for bass), Melodic Minor Scales in 2 octaves (1 for bass): a, d, e, g

Woodwind, Brass, Mallets: All 12 major scales- multiple octaves preferred when possible Strings: Major scales up to 4 sharps and 4 flats performed in 3 octaves (2 octaves for bass), Melodic Minor Scales in 3 octaves (2 for bass): a, d, e, g

2. Prepared solo excerpts demonstrating the musician’s highest level ofability with contrasting lyrical and technical passages. (2-3 minutes; memorypreferred; no accompanist allowed; no duplicate sheet music needed)3. A short sight-reading excerpt4. An excerpt taken from the following pieces and found on thefollowing pages Repertory Level: Three Riders Overture, Carrie Lane Gruselle, Tempo Moderato

Concert Level: Overture to Die Fledermaus, Stauss arr. Kennedy

Symphony Level: Merry Wives of Windsor, NicholaiTchaikovsky Symphony 4 in F minor, Op. 36, mov. 4

Audition Requirements

Percussion: Be prepared to audition in at least 2 of the following areas: snare, tympani, and mallet excerpts from alternate repertoire found on the following

pages.

Repertory Orchestra Concert Orchestra Symphony Orchestra Mallets: Solo, Sight-reading, 7 major scales in 2 octaves, excerpt found on the following pages Tympani: Solo, Sight-reading, tuning, excerpt found on the following pages Snare: Solo, Sight-reading, excerpt found on the following pages and the following rudiments: a. Long Roll (open-closed-open)b. Flamsc. Paradiddlesd. Flam Accentse. Dragsf. Lesson 25

Students auditioning at the CO level are expected to have mastered the requirements for the RO Orchestra and should be able to demonstrate competency of those requirements in addition to the following CO requirements:

Mallets: Solo, Sight-reading, 12 major scales in 2 octaves, excerpt found on the following pages Tympani: Solo, Sight-reading, tuning, excerpt found on the following pages Snare: Solo, Sight-reading, excerpt found on the following pages and the following rudiments: a. Long Roll (open-closed-open)b. Single Stroke Rollc. Flam paradiddled. Ratamacuee. Flam tapf. Dragsg. 5 stroke rolls

Students auditioning at the SO level are expected to have mastered the requirements for the RO and CO Orchestras and should be able to demonstrate competency of those requirements in addition to the following SO requirements:
