Audience/Genre Research Results
In order to get a better idea of what to do for our production, we
sent 50 people a questionnaire for them to answer online over the
period of one month. In total 37 people responded to the
questionnaire, mainly close friends and family, and the majority of
people had given serious answers, but there were a few µjokey ones¶ so to speak.
The first question we asked was the gender of the person answering
the questionnaire.
As you can see from the results from the first question, more male
people answered the questionnaire. This immediately indicates thatmen seem to be more interested in the project as a whole. Also by
knowing the persons gender we can get an idea of what men want
and the similarities and differences that women also want.
The second question we asked them was their age.
From these results it is very clear that our target audience will be
people aged 16-20. Other than our target audience age, people

over 30 years old answered. This also gives us an idea of what
people over and under our target audience age think about it. By
only looking at the first two questions and their results, you can
determine that our target audience are clearly males aged 16-20.
The third question asked the person what their favourite genre of
film was.

The results show, from the 37 responses, that action/thriller was
the most popular choice with 15 of the 37 votes totalling 41%.
Second in popularity were comedy films with around 10 responses
totalling 27%. This gave us an idea of what people prefer to watch,
which would make our project a bigger success.
The next question was to determine people¶s favourite films.

After analysing the results, despite favourite genres, the majority of
people¶s favourite films were action/thriller films instead of what the
genres would suggest. With 15 people saying action/thriller is their
favourite genre, and 18 people saying their favourite film that is
classed under µaction¶ or µthriller.¶
A question not really relevant to what we needed, was the personsfavourite actor actress.

As I said earlier, the question isn¶t really relevant to what we
needed to find out. However it did give us an idea of what type of
actors or actresses preferred, for example Morgan Freeman who is
usually classed as being an action movie star and usually stars in
action films such as µWanted.¶
The next four questions were also not relevant to what we werelooking to gain from our genre research. The questions are below.

These questions were not needed but they gave is an idea of what
people watch, when and where they watch them and who theywatch them with.

The final question we asked was probably the most important. We
asked the people what they think we should do and what they think
would be a good thing to do for our coursework.

After adding up all the results of what people think we should do
the overall majority vote went to action/thriller with 13 people
suggesting we do an action/thriller for our coursework.
The results are as follows: Action/Thriller 13/37 ± 35%
Comedy 10/37 ± 27%
Horror 8/37 ± 22%
Other 6/37 ± 16%
After we had completed the questionnaire, collected and analysed
the results we decided to make an action/thriller film aimed at
people around the ages of 16-20.Now that we had decided what our target audience, genre etc were
going to be, we started interviewing people on video to gain a
further understanding of what they wanted from an action/thriller
film.
Overall I think that the genre research was a success as we now
know exactly what we are going to do and who it will appeal to.
