1823 1934/35 Melbourne Centenary, case for “The Star – Who Will it Be?” contest which was originally presented with a Melbourne Centenary Florin enclosed within (the coin presented with this box now missing), immaculate condition and a rarely-seen piece of MelbournianaThe Star was a Melbourne post-Depression era newspaper which ran briefl y from October 1933 until its demise in April 1936. The “Who Will It Be” Contest was an immensely popular reader-participation event culminating in a gala presentation night attended by 10000 people. Major prizes included a cruise and a motor cycle while consolation prizes of various types and values included a silver fox fur, diamond brooch, chocolates and theatre tickets. Although no records are known concerning the boxed Centenary Florins in the event, evidently they were amongst of the schedule of prizes though the very small number seen today suggests they were only few in number Est. $500
