ATMOSPHERIC EFFECT ON

REMOTE SENSING DATA

Interactions with the Atmosphere

Scattering

ATMOSPHERIC WINDOWS

Gases absorb electromagnetic energy in very specific regions of the spectrum they influence

where(in the spectrum) we can “look” for remote sensing purpose.

Those areas of the spectrum which are not Everely influenced by atmospheric absorption and

thus are useful to remote sensors, are called atmospheric windows.

ABSORPTIONEFFECTIVE LOSS OF ENERGY TO ATMOSPHERE

CONSTITUENTS- MOST EFFICIENT ABSORBERS WATER VAPOR,CARBON

DIOXIDE AND OZONE.-ABSORPTION TAKES PLACE IN SPECIFIC WAVELENGTH

BANDS.

RADAR AND PASSIVE MICROWAVE OPERATE IN THE 1 MM TO 1 M REGION.

THE MOST EFFICIENT ABSOBERS OF SOLAR RADATION IN THIS REGRAD ARE WATER VAPOUR,CABON DIOXIDE AND

OZONE.The wavelenth ranges in which the atmosphere is particularly transmissive of energy are referred to

asAtmospheric windows.

EFFECT OF THE ATMOSPHERE

•Atmospheric composition causes wavelenght dependent absorption and scattering.

•Atmosphere effects degrade the quality of images.

•Some atmospheric effects are correctable before an image is analyzed and intepreted.

•Non selective scattering causes haze in remote sensed image.

•It is also decrease the contrast of the image.
