The N ov ie boats are extrem ely quick fo r single screw vessels, bu t do not sport fly in g bridges in the m anner o f m od em U.S. sport fish ­ing craft. The bait is m ackerel or herring, and each leader is festooned with up to 20 herring or m ackerel hung to the w ire by break - aw ay threads. O nly on e bait, the a fter­m ost one, contains a hook. In use, the lines from tw o fishing rods are elevated by a pair o f sim p le bam boo outriggers w hich are p laced not in conventional holders, bu t in special holders in the stern.

It is the practice o f the m ates here to g ive the outriggers a b ig m anual sw eep from tim e to tim e, to lend action to the baits, or to free c lin g ­ing sea w eed . T h e use o f these manual outriggers is perm itted un­der local tournam ent rules. W hile m ost o f the fish w ere taken at the Rip, H utton ’s w in n in g fish was hooked at the m outh o f the Tusket R iver, another prim e tuna location .

The W edgeport tuna tournam ent is one o f the oldest and m ost pres­tigious international tournam ents in the w orld. T he first contest w as run back in 1937, and tw o team s repre­senting G reat Britain and the U.S. com peted, w ith the B ritish w inn ing by four fish to the U.S. single tuna. M atches w ere suspended during W orld W ar T w o, to b e resum ed in 1947.

Due to no strikes and generally poor fishing, the M atches w ere suspended in 1958, not to be re ­sum ed until this year. T h e success

o f this season’s M atch practica lly assures repetition in 1966. This is good , because it is hard to think o f a p lace o r a fish in g con test w here hospitality , tradition, sportsm anship and good feelin g are so graciously com bined .
