Step One: Realize the Problem is your own…you have a Right to how you feel.

Step Two: State the problemBe very specific. State the problem in “I would….”Avoid manipulation

Step Three: Tell your feelingsUse I feel statements.

Step Four: Describe the Consequences State your problemThen describe the consequences for not

getting cooperation.

Assertiveness Tips:1. Speak up immediately2. Be direct3. Be pleasant4. Be calm5. Maintain an assertiveness journal6. Hire a coach to have a safe place to

practice your skills7. Stop. Breathe. Think. Reframe. Take

action.

How to deal with resistance?

Role PlayScenario: The gum chomping co-worker.

Get him/her to stop making noise for you to complete your assignment for your boss.
