HIST 281/ASIA 281 Samurai and Gongfu Heroes: Masculinity in East Asia

MWF 9:05-9:55 (This is in the process of being approved by the University Senate, and by Fall will be listed as ASIA 106/HIST 106)

In films, stories and official histories Chinese and Japanese people have been encouraged to emulate the great heroes of the past. In this class we will look at what it means to be a man, from the haohan of China to the Men of High Purpose of Japan and beyond, and how these people and their stories have been re-used in modern Asia

Surveys a selection of art and architectural forms from China, Japan, India, Korea, and Southeast Asia. Students are introduced to religious and secular sculpture, painting, and ceramics, as well as the philosophical, political, and social forces that prompted their creation.

ANTH 272 Cultural Area: China MW 5:05-6:20

A broad introduction to Chinese culture and society from an anthropological perspective. The course covers a range of topics pertaining to Chinese traditional culture, including marriage, family, education, governance, gender, religion, language, health, art, and music.

An intensive, comparative study of the government and politics of Asia

ARTHI 425 Arts of China MWF 9:05-9:55Analyzes the arts of China, past and present. Examines representative examples from major periods, emphasizing the cultural, political, and/or religious context of the work.

HIST 434 W01 Modern China 1800 to present MWF 1:25-2:15

China’s age of revolution. We will look at the impact of imperialism and modernization on China, and how the Chinese people responded to these and created a world power

RLST 485 Selected Topics in Feminist Studies of Religion--Oishi Junkyo: Geisha, Artist, Buddhist Nun MWF 11:15-12:05

On June 20, 1905 Nakagawa Manjiro, the proprietor of a popular geisha house in Osaka, went on a bloody rampage after

discovering that his wife was having an affair. In less than fifteen minutes he murdered five

people within his establishment. Only a seventeen-year-old apprentice geisha named Tsumakichi survived the attack, although she was severely wounded by her foster father’s samurai sword. Over the next six decades, Tsumakichi—or Oishi Junkyo as she would

eventually be called—would perform in vaudeville, establish herself as a well-known painter, and eventually renounce secular life

to become a Buddhist nun.

This course uses the life of this fascinating woman as a means to better understand early twentieth-century Japanese society and culture, especially the interrelationship between the “flower and willow world,” the performing and visual arts, and Shingon Buddhism.
