The important thing to remember is

that there is no right or wrong way to

feel. You might collapse under the weight

of all the emotions hitting you at once, or

you may experience the stages of grief 

gradually, over an extended period.It’s generally accepted that there are

several stages of grief: these can includefeelings of shock, anger, despair, denial,and pain, before acceptance, adjustmentand moving on.

Don’t expect to go through these emo-tions one after the other, but do expect tofeel them over time.

Sometimes grief is just too much tobear. It might engulf yourwhole life, leav-ing everything seemingly chaotic and outof control.

You might be left feeling shocked andnumb, perhaps angry or guilty, or per-

haps, you might feel an overwhelmingsadness.

All of these feelings are ok and youshould give yourself time to workthrough them as they will ease with time.

Talking and sharing your feelings withsomeone can help – you’re not alone.

Even if you don’t have family or friendsaround you, there is support available.Why not speak to your GP for help or callCruse on 0844 4779400?

Your GP could put you in touch with abereavement counsellor who will giveyou the time and space to talk about yourthoughts and feelings.

Sometimes grief doesn’t hit for manyyears after the person has died or some-times it can go on for years: either way abereavement counsellor can help.

Finally, don’t be afraid to talk aboutthe person who has died. Perhaps thosearound you arescared to mention them

in case it causes upset, but sometimesremembering your loved one and talkingabout them can ease the pain a little.
