Sorsogon City

The Sorsogon State College is mandated to deliver sustained quality and excellent instruction, responsive knowledge generation and community involvement consistent with the development framework of the national government. With this, it is but proper that as part of it continuous growth and development, the College now look forward to be a university. The advent of ASEAN 2015 and the Outcomes-Based Education even strengthened its pursuit for such to accommodate every challenge these programs may bring. Thus, the following basic information are given.

ENROLMENT AND PROGRAMS

There are 8, 503 students enrolled in Sorsogon State College from its four campuses for SY 2014-2015. In the same school year, 1, 630 were the graduates under Baccalaureate and 86 for Graduate Studies and 89 for laboratory high school. These graduates were given the learning opportunities to be real world of their work before graduation that provide them with the avenues of applying what they learned inside the classroom. There were about 1117 of them underwent on-the-job training for professional practice and/or discovery of new knowledge.

Sorsogon State College offers 29 programs/courses. Twenty-three (23) are bachelor degree, two (2) are two-year course and four (4) of which are under School of Graduate Studies. Sorsogon City Campus has eight (8), Bulan Campus has nine (9), Castilla Campus has five (5) and Magallanes Campus has three (3). The College offers courses in Graduate Studies, Architecture and Engineering, Education, Business and Accountancy, Technology, Agriculture, Fisheries and Information Technology. From these courses, the submission of thesis, projects, feasibility studies and research papers were required as well as part of the curriculum. From the efforts of the entire College, it can be noted that they excel in board examinations especially in Engineering and Education courses and in national competency assessment for Technology courses.

Along quality and relevance instruction, the College continues to achieve the highest possible level of accreditation in the different programs/courses it offers this year. When this is pursued, the College can be competent offering tertiary education at international standards and level. As an initiative, the Office of International Affairs has been already proposed to cater international affairs of the College. This will serve a number of benefits to the College as a whole.

The College’s plan for establishing its doctoral program is now in the offing. It is pursuing the approval of the Board of Trustees this year. With this, the Sorsogon State College-School of Graduate Studies is the sole public graduate school in the whole province to serve the professionals in their quest for their continued professional growth and development.

FACULTY

The Sorsogon State College is being served with 173 regular permanent faculty members as of December 2014. They are accordingly placed with their teaching loads along their fields of specialization to ensure successful and authentic transfer of learning. Most specially, those teaching in the Graduate School are graduates of doctoral’s degree.

For the past three years, the College has registered an average of 42 faculty members involved in research out of 173 faculty members. The College allotted Php 1, 477, 000 GAA Budget 2015. The projected amount from STF (Student Trust Fund) is Php 4, 826, 320.70, therefore, there are Php 6, 303, 320.70 budget for research undertakings.

LEARNING RESOURCES AND SUPPORT STRUCTURES

The College’s learning resources and support structures will be strengthened by the upcoming project on E-Library where it intends to modernize the library access and facility. It amounted to P10M. It is targeted to be accomplished this year. Moreover, it is part of the College’s plan and budget to upgrade the learning and teaching facilities on agri-fisheries and purchase various laboratory facilities and equipment for engineering and architecture.

LINKAGES AND OUTREACH

Along Linkages and Outreach, the College this time is doing its greater efforts and means to link with other research institutions in the different parts of the world to ensure that the research activities are of global standards. The fact that the College has been an active part of the research global community evident in its accomplishments on international and national presentations and publications, the College continues to pursue this area of evaluation to be one of its strengths. With its partnership with different agencies, public or private, national or international, this can be an avenue to apply the new knowledge gained to contribute to the social development of different communities.

RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

The College is currently into different IGP activities; however, it still needs to expand its efforts along this area. There are initiatives to realize this such as increasing the budget for production that will provide additional capital for income generating project of the College. Also, it is assured to be purposeful since it will likewise serve students in their laboratory activities.
