ELECTRICAL DESIGN & ANALYSES

ALUMINUM v. COPPER STUDY

HIGH EFFICIENCY TRANSFORMER ANALYSIS

April 18th, 2007 Senior Thesis Presentation Sara J Schonour – L/E

Al v. Cu STUDY

QUERY: Would Aluminum Feeders be more cost efficient than the existing Copper Feeders?

1. Determine lengths of feeders

2. Determine number of conductors

3. Cost analysis for each type of material

April 18th, 2007 Senior Thesis Presentation Sara J Schonour – L/E

Al v. Cu STUDY

COST ANAYLSIS

April 18th, 2007 Senior Thesis Presentation Sara J Schonour – L/E

Al v. Cu STUDY

Lower Initial Cost

Lighter

(Can span greater distances,

Costs less to transport)

Larger in X-sectional Area

(Will require larger conduit)

Higher Coefficient of Expansion

(Can create hazardous situations)

Oxidizes

Less Durable

Weaker in Tension & Shear

Less Workable

CONSPROS

April 18th, 2007 Senior Thesis Presentation Sara J Schonour – L/E

CONCLUSION:

Copper has a less expensive life cycle when primary price, installing, maintenance, repairs and replacement are all taken into consideration.

HIGH EFFICIENCY TRANSFORMER ANALYSIS

April 18th, 2007 Senior Thesis Presentation Sara J Schonour – L/E

CONCLUSION:

Not only would High Efficiency Transformers save over $22,000 a year, but the payback period would be less than six months. They would definitely be a benefit.

CM BREADTH WORK

ISSUES THAT COULD HAMPER or HELP PROJECT DELIVERY:

Coordination of Drawings

Documentation of Information

Back-up Plans

April 18th, 2007 Senior Thesis Presentation Sara J Schonour – L/E

CM BREADTH WORK

COORDINATION OF DRAWINGS:

Problem: Ceiling plenum design overlap not caught till late stages of design development

Solution: Regular team meetings with Pin-Ups

Open information sharing forums / sessions

Update progress in Real Time

April 18th, 2007 Senior Thesis Presentation Sara J Schonour – L/E

CM BREADTH WORK

DOCUMENTATION OF INFORMATION:

Problem: Disputes occur over “he said / she said” issues, the ball is dropped along the chain of execution

Solution: Record meetings to avoid dispute Archive electronic communication regularly w/

date / time stamp for reference

Follow-up to avoid miscommunication

April 18th, 2007 Senior Thesis Presentation Sara J Schonour – L/E

CM BREADTH WORK

BACK-UP PLANS:

Problem: Budget is no longer sufficient to implement lighting / electrical design

Solution: Value Engineering

Three Brand Spec

Priority / Hierarchy List

April 18th, 2007 Senior Thesis Presentation Sara J Schonour – L/E

CONCLUSION:

Communication, Organization and Flexibility are three skills that are integral in overcoming job related issues.

Implementation of these tools can help avoid setbacks or make them more manageable.
