The KaldnesTM biofilm processThefirstKaldnes™biofilmprocessformunicipalwastewatertreatmentwasputintooperationinNorwayintheearly1990s.Today,withmorethan200municipalinstallations,theKaldnes™processisoneofthemostwelldocumentedbiologicalsolutionsfortreatmentofmunicipalwastewater.BasedonAnoxKaldnesveryflexibleandversatileMBBRtech-nology,theKaldnes™biofilmprocesscanbedesignedfordifferentmunicipalapplicationsandlevelsoftreatment.Asforexample,BODremovalcanbeachievedinasimplehigh-rateKaldnes™processinoneortwostages,whilefarreachingnitrogenremovalcanbeperformedinmulti-reactorsystemscomprisingstagesforpre-denitrification,BOD-remov-al,nitrificationandpost-denitrification.UtilizationofdifferentMBBRswithspecializedandhighlyactivemicro-organismsisthekeytothehighefficiencyandcompactnessoftheKaldnes™process.AstheKaldnes™biofilmprocessisoperatedwithoutsludgerecycle,onlyexcessbiomassformedintheprocesshastobeseparatedinthefollowingseparationunit.ThismeansthechoiceofseparationisveryflexibleandcompactunitssuchasActiflo™ordissolvedairflotationcanbeusedtocreateatotallyverycompactplant.
