We studied in pairs the potenti als of an interdisciplinary working environment where diff erent fi elds of research can collaborate.

The locati on for our project was in an existi ng building with a post and beam structure north of Alexanderplatz, Berlin.

Our project was developed around a large fl exible space, the «mobile zone», promoti ng exchange between the various disciplines. Researchers, students, administrati ve personnel, laboratory technicians can meet and decide where and with whom to work.

As well as a system of inner courtyards, traditi onal offi ces and laboratories are organised as a series of boxes on the periphery of this central space.

In pairs, we questi oned the traditi onal offi ce space and worked towards proposing innovati ve soluti ons for the worker. The project was set near the Flon in Lausanne and had the parti cularity of presenti ng two diff erent street levels.

In order to break the scale of the deep plan, we created a system of two alternati ng fl oors. The crossing load bearing walls defi ne a sequence of closed and open working spaces.

Aft er working on a 1:5 cardboard model in order to elaborate a picture of a «Reading Space», I worked on the development of a «House of Books» within a former 300 m² grain silo.

By considering the existi ng building as one mass of books which I «cut», I separated the bott om archive space from the above library space. These two masses are both physically and visually linked through the introducti on of the entrance, an intermediary designed space.

The work inserted itself in a virtual verti cal city, «the matrix». Noti ons of scale, void and neighbourhood links were considered.

I developped the concept of an abstract frame called «the horizon line» through which visual links were established between diff erent parts of the matrix.

Through a series of exercises, we were led to questi on our percepti on of the visible world.

Diff erent representati onal techniques were used and explored in order to rethink broad spati al issues: light, materiality, the scale of the human body.
