Introduction
The Church was established in AD 37 by St. Peter, the chief of apostles in Antioch. Syriac OrthodoxChurch occupies an important position among theancient independent churches of the world. TheSyriac Patriarchs of Antioch are successors of St.Peter and the head of the Syrian Orthodox church. It uses Syriac as its liturgical language and keepsthe ancient liturgical tradition of the church ofAntioch. In this article I would like to discuss theChristology of the Syrian Orthodox Churchespecially the two terms ‘Monophysitism’ and‘Miaphysitism’.
Christological controversy in 451
Syriac Orthodox Church rejected the FourthEcumenical Council of AD 451 which is known asthe Council of Chalcedon. This council wassummoned by the bishops not to defineChristology, but to fine tune it and to examine theextreme “monophysite” heresy of the AlexandrianEutyches who took the Christology of St. Cyril toan extreme seeing in Christ a humanity which waslost, swallowed up in a see of divinity. The SyriacOrthodox church fathers (not only Syriac Orthodoxchurch fathers, but also all the Oriental Orthodoxchurch fathers) rejected not only Eutyches, butalso the definitions and acts of Chalcedon dueprimarily to the Tome of Leo, which “separated’the activities of Christ according to human or divine, thus tending strongly toward the dangers anderrors of Nestorius.
The main reason of the controversy
The main reason for this controversy is theaffirmation by the Chalcedonian (Eastern Orthodoxchurches) of “two natures, two wills and twoenergies hypostatically united in the one LordJesus Christ”. While the Syrian Orthodox churchand other Oriental Orthodox churches affirm “oneunited Divine-Human nature, will and energy in thesame Christ without confusion, without change,
without division and without separation from thevery moment of His descent to the Virgin’s wombwhere He took to Himself from her a human bodywith a human rational soul and made Himself onewith the manhood which He took from her asformulated by St. Cyril as “one incarnate nature ofGod the word”. Syrian Orthodox fathers and St.Cyril appeared to be an especially strongopponents of the council of Chalcedon.
Is Syriac Orthodox Church Monophysite?
Some non oriental orthodox people believe thatthe Syrian Orthodox Church subscribes to theMonophysite doctrine (Greek word ‘mono’means one, ‘physis’ means nature). This isincorrect. Monophysitism is a Christologicalheresy that originated in the 5th century A.D. Itschief proponent was the monk Eutyches, whostated that in the person of Jesus Christ the humannature was absorbed into the divine nature.Eutyches refused to confess that Christ partookof our humanity teaching that He was solely divine. The doctrine of Monophysites believes that “Jesuswas not human, but exclusively divine, and Godhimself, therefore he could not have died.” And thisdoctrine is not Orthodox.
Miaphysite Christology of the Syriac OrthodoxChurch
Miaphysitism is the Christology of the SyriacOrthodox church. Miaphysitism holds that in theone person of Jesus Christ, Divinity and Humanityare united in one “nature”, the two being unitedwithout separation, without confusion, and withoutalteration. The Syrian Orthodox church consideredas central the Christology is Miaphysis. What isthe difference between ‘mono’ and ‘mia’? ‘Mono’is one in the sense of a numerical one, whereas‘mia’ is one in the sense of a united, or composite, one. The word “Miaphysite” was taken from St.Cyril’s famous phrase “Mia Physis tou Theo LogosSesarkomene,” and thus this has been adopted

by Syrian Orthodox church fathers along with itstheological implications. The Syriac Orthodoxchurch abides by the formula “The one incarnatenature of God the word”, on which St. Cyril ofAlexandria increasingly insisted upon, a formulawhich was accepted as correct by the Council ofEphesus in 431 A.D and which, after the Councilof Chalcedon, the Chalcedonian side in the Eastitself admitted. The expression “One Nature” doesnot indicate the Divine nature alone nor the humannature alone, but it indicates the unity of bothnatures into One Nature which is “The Nature ofthe Incarnate Logos”.
What is the Christology of Syrian OrthodoxChurch?
According to Church fathers, we can thussummarize the Christology of the Syriac OrthodoxChurch.
l The belief of Syriac Orthodox Church is that“mia” one, but not “single one” or “simple one,”but unity, one “out of two natures”.
l According to the non oriental orthodoxchristians “one nature” of Christ means onlyone of two probabilities: the natures had beenabsorbed or confusion between the divine andhuman nature happened to produce oneconfused nature. But Syriac Orthodox churchconfirmed that no confusion or absorption hadoccurred but a real unity.
l The Word became truly man. He is at onceGod and man. The manhood of Jesus Christwas perfect. And he had a body and also asoul. Jesus Christ’s manhood was not formedbefore the incarnation. Moreover the manhooddid not exist then the Godhead dwelt in itafterwards.
l The Syrian Orthodox believe that, they receivethe true body and blood of Jesus Christ in thecommunion. These belong to man, humanity, and we know that Jesus Christ is God, thedivine.
l Syrian Orthodox church believe the divinity andhumanity of Christ are manifested, and the co-equality of Jesus Christ with God the father.
l Jesus Christ was at the same time perfect Godand perfect man. This is the union of the naturesin the incarnation. Jesus Christ was no longer
in two natures after the union and He is nottwo persons. But one person, one incarnatenature of God the son, with one will, but beingat once divine and human. The two naturesbecame united into one nature withoutseparation, without confusion and withoutchange.
Conclusion
Syriac Orthodox are often mistakenly consideredMonophysites by many Latin Catholics andByzantine Orthodox. The Syriac Orthodox, beingMiaphysite, reject the ecumenical council ofChalcedon, and anathematize Nestorianism, andthus accept Ephesus; they do not accept any otherecumenical councils but the first three. In recenttimes, the Pope of Rome has made progress inresolving doctrinal differences of the RomanCatholic Church with the Syriac Orthodox Churchand other Oriental Orthodox Churches, and havetogether signed Joint Christological Statementssaying we believe in the same thing aboutChristology expressed differently. This has greatlyhelped to overcome a disagreement that had beenstarted over 1,500 years ago. Such dialogues andencounters fostered healthy situation of mutualunderstanding and recovery of the deeper spiritualcommunion based on the common faith in thenature of Jesus Christ that they have been giventhrough the Gospel of Christ.

Pancreatic
Cancer is deadly;
many Indians
vulnerable
Apple co-founder Steve
Jobs died of compli-
cations from Pancreatic
cancer. In India, four to six of 1 lakh people suffer
from the rare form of cancer. Health experts said
there has been a rise in people suffering from
pancreatic cancer in India, especially in urban
cities like Mumbai. They warn that it might
become a lifestyle disease soon.
“People eat fatty food which is one of the major
causes of pancreatic cancer”, said Dr. Shailesh
Shrikhande, head of gastro-intestinal surgery
department at Tata hospital. He said lung and
pancreatic cancer accounts for 35 percent of
cancer cases in the city.
Pancreatic cancer has a negligible survival rate
and is ranked fourth in cancer-related deaths in
the US.
“Pancreatic cancer is of two types -
neuroendocrine cancer, a less lethal form which
Jobs suffered from, and classic pancreatic which
is deadly. There are more case of former in India.
The tumours are located on the head of the
pancreas. They block the bile duct and cause
jaundice”, said Dr. Shrikhande.
Dr. Rakesh Rai, head of the transplantation
department at Fortis hospital, was part of team
which operated on Steve Jobs in 2009. “He had
the less aggressive type of pancreatic cancer.
In 2004, he had a surgery but the disease
returned in 2009 - his liver got affected. He had
come for liver transplant. If we had not done the
surgery he would have died in 3-4 months”, he
said.
“We are certainly seeing a rising number of
pancreatic cancer cases. Smoking and alcohol
are major causes of pancreatic cancer which is
more dangerous than oral cancer” said senior
oncologist Dr. Anil Heroor. DNA

Cardiovascular diseases are the world’s largest
killers, claiming 17.3 million lives a year. According
to WHO and the World Heart Federation, risk
factors for heart disease and stroke include raised
blood pressure, cholestrol and glucose levels,
smoking, inadequate intake of fruits and vegetables,
overweight, obesity and physical inactivity.
World Heart Day was created in 2000 to inform
people around the globe that heart disease and
stroke are the world’s leading cause of death,
claiming 17.1 million lives each year. Together with
its members, the World Heart Federation spreads
the news that at least 80% of premature deaths
from heart disease and stroke could be avoided if
the main risk factors, tobacco, unhealthy diet and
physical inactivity are controlled. World Heart Day
takes place on September 29th each year.
After two years of focusing on heart health in the
workplace, this year WHO and the World Heart
Federation have called on individuals to reduce their
own and their family’s risk of heart disease and
stroke.
They have asked people to take charge of their
home’s heart health by taking steps such as
choosing healthy food options, increasing physical
activity and saying no to tobacco.
Prevention measures
l Have your cholestrol checked. Test your
cholestrol levels at least once every five years.
Talk with your doctor about this simple blood
test.
l Monitor your blood pressure. High blood
pressure has no symptoms, so be sure to have
it checked on a regular basis.
l Manage your diabetes. If you have diabetes,
closely monitor your blood sugar levels. Talk
with your doctor about treatment options.
COMBAT CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASES TOGETHERWorld Heart Day 2011 highlights the need to take charge of your home’s
heart health and reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke
l You and your doctor can work together to
prevent or treat the medical conditions that lead
to heart disease. Discuss your treatment plan
regularly and bring a list of questions to your
appointments.
Raising the Good Cholestrol
l Most people are usually concerned about their
total cholestrol levels, and their amount of LDL
(the ‘bad cholestrol’). But in reality, low HDL
levels are also closely linked to coronary heart
disease. According to a recent article in the
Cleveland Clinic Journal of Medicine, a low level
of the ‘good cholestrol’ (HDL-C) is the most
common lipoprotein abnormality in people with
coronary heart disease. These low levels best
predict the risk of heart disease, even when the
total cholestrol is within the normal range.
l The National Cholestrol Education Program
defines an HDL reading below 40 as an
independent risk factor for heart disease.
Lifestyle measures for raising your HDL levels
include weight loss, drug therapies, and omega-
3 (fish oil) supplements. While there are no
magic dietary bullets that raise HDL levels,
merely replacing fat with carbohydrates without
reducing caloric intake can cause good
cholestrol levels to fall by as much as 20 per
cent. Monounsaturated and polyunsaturated
fats, help lower blood cholestrol when used in
place of saturated fats.
l Even more important than diet and weight loss
is regular aerobic exercise. The more aerobic
exercise you do, (such as running, brisk
walking, swimming or cycling) the higher the
good cholestrol will be. And the duration of the
exercise rather than the intensity appears to
have the biggest influence. Good cholestrol rises
about a milligram for every four or five miles run/
covered each week. DNA

Indian being already declared as
Diabetic capital of world is now at biggest
risk to qualify for world heart disease
capital status as well. Let us understand
some of the factors driving this trend and
how they affect us.
Smoking
Smoking is a major reversible cause of heart
disease. Smoking can cause several disease such
as atherosclerosis, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary
Disease (COPD) and emphysema, which put
increased pressure on the heart. The AHA says
that those exposed to secondhand smoke increase
their risk of heart disease by 25 to 30 percent.
Hypertension
Hypertension can cause heart disease by
overworking the heart. The heart must contract with
greater force to push blood through constricted
vessels. The American Heart Association says that
about one in three people has hypertension and
one-third of them do not know it.
High Cholestrol
According to the National Heart, Lung and Blood
Institute (NHLBI), the higher the cholestrol, the
higher the risk of heart disease. A level of less than
200 is desirable, 200-239 is borderline, and greater
than 240 puts a person at twice the risk of a person
with a level of 200.
Diabetes
Having Diabetes (uncontrolled or controlled)
increase the risk of heart disease. According to
the AHA, at least 65 percent of all diabetics will
die of heart disease.
Obesity
The NHLBI says that obesity has three
components. Body Mass Index (BMI), waist
circumference and diseases associated with
obesity. Those with a BMI of 30 and those who are
overweight with a BMI of 25 to 29.9 are at risk for
heart disease. A waist measuring 40 inches or
more in men and 35 inches or more in women
represents an increased risk. Obesity is also
associated with hypertension, diabetes and
atherosclerosis, all of which are risks for heart
disease.
Inactivity
Inactivity increases the risk of obesity. Obesity
spawns many secondary diseases such as
diabetes and hypertension, which in turn increases
the risk of heart disease.
Uncontrollable factors
The AHA lists uncontrollable risk factors as race,
heredity and age. African-American men are at
highest risk for heart disease. African-Americans
are at highest risk, as well as those with a family
history, men older than 35 years and post-
menopausal women.
A recent study from Washington University in St.
Louis explain why more than 75 percent of diabetics
die of heart disease (Journal for the American
College of Cardiology, February 7, 2009).
Another study from Sweden shows that many
people discover that they are diabetic only after
they have had a heart attack.
Too much salt in your diet can lead to high blood
pressure and increased risk of heart attack or
stroke.
High blood pressure is a chronic condition, and
the damage it causes to blood vessels and organs
generally occurs over years. DNA

Sedentary lifestyle, stress to blame
While the world observed World Health Day on
September 29, Mumbaikars do not seem to care
about their hearts. Heart ailments are no longer
restricted to the elderly.
City cardiologists have reported a rise in the number
of youngsters, even teenagers, suffering from heart
ailments. Doctors attribute this to sedentary
lifestyles and stress.
On September 22, Bhiwandi resident Mohammed
Sharif Ansari, 31, underwent an angioplasty at Nair
hospital. “I used to smoke three packets of
cigarettes every day for more than a decade”, said
Ansari, who has kicked the butt.
He used to suffer from chest pains but he ignored
it as he thought he was too young to suffer from
any heart problems. “But when the pain was severe
and I visited a cardiologist, I was shocked when
the angiography revealed three blockages in my
heart”.
The number of people suffering from heart ailments
has tripled in the last few years, among those below
40 years of age.
“I recently did an angioplasty on a 16 year old boy.
Lifestyles have changed and people are into
unhealthy eating habits. I have patients who are
25 to 35 years old”, said Dr. Ajay Chaurasia,
cardiology department head, Nair hospital.
“Earlier, hardly 2% of people below 40 years of age
suffered from heart ailments. Now, the number has
touched 40%. The youngest I have operated on
was a 17 year old”, said Dr. Ramakant Panda, one
of India’s leading cardiologists.
According to the Cardiological Society of India,
more than two lakh Indians underwent angioplasty
and around 1.5 lakh had bypass surgeries in 2010.
Of these, 5% were in Mumbai, which contains for
a little over 1% of India’s total population.
Cardiac surgeries have been increasing at a steady
20% each year, said Dr. Dev Pahlajani, chief
interventional cardiologist at Breach Candy
Hospital. At this rate, the number of patients with
heart ailments is expected to touch 60 lakh by
2025.
A recent survey conducted by Metropolis Healthcare
found that women from Mumbai between 25 and
45 years of age have alarmingly high cholestrol
and triglyceride levels, which are major risk factors
of heart diseases.
The survey screened 93,316 samples across four
tests by enzymatic methods to evaluate the risk
factors for coronary diseases in both men and
women.
Of the 32,634 who tested positive - cholestrol and
triglycerides were present in their blood stream -
17,379 were men and 15,255 women. Though the
lipid levels in men was more than that in women,
5,172 women had higher cholestrol levels than
3,368 men. DNA
YOUNG TOO AT ‘HEART’ OF THE PROBLEM
MUMBAI IN DANGER ZONE
One in every 20 people over the age of 40 suffers
from coronary heart disease in Mumbai. Of these,
75% go undetected until the person suffers a
heart attack.
There are three lakh detected cases of heart
disease in Mumbai.
Doctors have also recorded a rise in the number
of women between 25 and 45 years of age
suffering from heart ailments. This is happening
because of the high stress level, erratic working
hours and smoking habits which is a major factor
in terms of heart disease.
According to doctors, apart from sedentary
lifestyle and stress, pollution is also a cause
for more and more people suffering from heart
related problems. In a city like Mumbai, the
polluted air a person breathes in one day is
equivalent to smoking 10 cigarettes a day.

Diabetics’ coronary calcium levels are
strongly linked to heart attack risk
Notable levels of calcium buildup in coronary
arteries can be strong predictors of heart attacks
and strokes in people with diabetes and metabolic
syndrome, according to a study led by UC Irvine’s
Heart Disease Prevention Program.
The researchers also found that individuals with
diabetes or metabolic syndrome but no evidence
of coronary calcium had cardiac-event risks as low
as many without these conditions.
Supported by the National Institutes of Health, the
multiethnic study of atherosclerosis involved 6,600
people ages 45 to 84. About 16 percent were
diabetic (primarily type 2); another 25 percent had
metabolic syndrome, a combination of disorders
that can lead to cardiovascular disease and
diabetes.
The researchers wanted to know whether
information from a heart scan for coronary calcium
or an ultrasound of the neck’s carotid artery could
supplement standard factors - high cholestrol,
smoking, elevated blood pressure - in assessing a
person’s chance of heart attack or stroke.
Diabetics have narrowed arteries because high
blood sugar levels cause plaques to form and
reduce the diameter of the coronary arteries. The
increased need for blood flow from burning fat and
the decreased blood flow from narrowed arteries
put diabetics at very high risk for heart attacks,
heart failure and sudden death. The increased use
of oxygen increases blood levels of oxidants that
further damage the inner linings of arteries. DNA
16 years on, no transplants
in city hospitalsSixteen years after
the state health
department granted
permission to seven
city hospitals to
perform heart
transplants, not
single surgery has
been conducted in
the city.
City cardiologists claim that this is because it
is not possible to get a donor when the heart
patient needs one.
“It is not easy for a family to donate a brain dead
patient’s heart. Moreover, the surgery costs more
than Rs. 40 lakhs. And those who can afford it,
prefer to get it done outside India”, said Dr.
Gustad Davar, medical director, PD Hinduja
Hospital.
Only when angioplasty and bypass surgery fail
is heart transplant considered. Under the Organ
Transplant Act, 1994, only a brain patient’s heart
can be used for transplant and that too after
getting the family’s permission.
It takes at least a year to perform a heart
transplant as there are logistic and regulation
issues. “Before a patient is put on the heart
transplant list, he or she is screened. Then a
team of doctors, nurses, social workers and bio-
ethicists review the medical history, diagnostic
test results, social history and psychosocial
evaluation results. Only after they are sure that
the patients will survive the surgery, will they
carry out the heart transplant”.
According to the procedure, only after the donor
heart reaches the operation theatre can the
surgeon remove the unhealthy heart and conduct
the transplant. The surgery can last for four hours
to 12 hours. DNA

PAPAYA AND EGG YOLK PUDDINGA pudding topped with kiwi and cream
We share with you the recipe for papaya and egg yolk pudding.
The papaya is used to give the desert a saffron tinge.
The pudding could be garnished with a slice of Kiwi and a dollop of whipped cream.
Directions:
Add the papaya, lemon or lime juice and water to
electric blender and blend on high for about 45
seconds. Scrape down the sides of the blender
with a rubber spatula. Repeat the blending process
until the mixture is a smooth puree.
Using the back of a spoon, rub the puree through a
fine sieve into a 2 quart stainless steel pan.
Add the sugar, mixing well to ensure even
distribution. Add the cloves and cinnamon stick.
Bring to boil over high heat, stirring constantly.
Cook until a few drops of the mixture immediately
form coarse threads when dropped from a spoon
into cold water. (The mixture needs to be stirred
regularly, until this point is reached.)
Remove the pan from the heat and using a slotted
spoon remove the cloves and cinnamon stick.
Discard the cloves and cinnamon stick.
Using a whisk, beat the egg yolks vigorously, in a
deep heat proof bowl, for about a minute, until the
yolks thicken slightly.
Pour the hot syrup into the egg yolks in a thin
stream, beating constantly and vigorously.
Continue to beat the mixture until it is smooth and
thick. It should be a deep bright yellow in color.
The mixture should be divided into 4 individual heat
proof dessert dishes and left to cool to room
temperature. The dessert will continue to thicken
while it cools.
The dish should be served immediately when it
reaches room temperature, or it may be completely
chilled in a refrigerator before serving.
The lemon/lime zest may be sprinkled on top of
the dessert before serving.
Ingredients:
1 medium sized ripe papaya
5 egg yolks
2 cups sugar
2 -3 lemons (or limes)
1/4 cup water
4 whole cloves
3 inches piece cinnamon sticks
