I n 2007 wordt Walsmit Sachs benaderd door Anne-
Marie Evans.
van zijn devies: ‘It’s better to work
with nature than against it.” De
tuinen zijn naar biologische regels
aangelegd en worden volkomen
ecologisch beheerd.
ontvangen. Daar krijgen zij een rondleiding door de
tuinen. Tijdens een receptie spreekt de prins uitgebreid
met alle kunstenaars persoonlijk.
I n 2007, Walsmit Sachs is approached by Anne-Marie
Evans. A year earlier, this famous English lecturer in
botanical illustration had launched the idea of making a
fl orilegium of the gardens of Highgove House, the estate
of Prince Charles, an initiative that the prince very much
supported. For 30 years Prince Charles has dedicated
his increasing passion for gardening and for nature to
the creation of a wonderful complex of gardens, real-
ized on the basis of his motto: ‘It’s better to work with
nature than against it.’ The gardens
are laid out according to biological
principles and are managed wholly
ecologically.
In a fl orilegium, fl owers and plants of
a particular garden are document-
ed in the form of watercolours as
a record for later generations. The
Highgrove Florilegium is made up
of contributions from more than
70 well-known artists from different
countries. Walsmit Sachs, the only
Dutch artist, is invited to do two
watercolours for the monumental
book – two volumes as big as a fi st
and an astonishing 65 cm high, with
about 120 images in their actual
size. Pleasantly surprised by this great honour, she choos-
es, from the garden’s plant list, the Syringa vulgaris ‘Mme
Lemoine’ (the ordinary lilac) and the Acer palmatum
‘Osakazuki’ (Japanese maple). After the second volume
of the exclusive book appears in the summer of 2009,
she, with the other artists, is received at Highgrove by
Prince Charles. There they get a tour of the gardens. The
prince speaks personally with all the artists during the
reception.

I n the Renaissance, explorers, usually botanists, often
travelled with draughtsmen.
In newly discovered territories, they encountered un-
known plants which could perhaps be used for medi-
cines or as trade goods. Their task was to document the
fl ora and fauna of the recently discovered territories. The
draughtsman was regarded as a professional, compara-
ble to any other honourable professional. The artist as
a person was not yet the centre of attention; attention
and praise went to his craftsmanship. Their task was to
document meticulously, for scientifi c purposes, the treas-
ures found. This task has remained unchanged through
the ages.
Certainly, if the work is to serve science, the result has to
be a most detailed and scientifi cally accurate representa-
tion of a plant in all the forms in which it appears, and
often of all its parts separately. This not only requires
a skilled hand in drawing; without thorough study be-
forehand, it is impossible to achieve a usable scientifi c
illustration. The ability of the botanical artist to add an
artistic component by making the work an attractive and
aesthetic whole, gives rise to admiration and respect for
the artist herself.
The scientifi c botanical drawing of a plant is still essential
to botanists and taxonomists today. In the twenty-fi rst
century it is hard to imagine that this work cannot be
taken over by the computer. The computer and the pho-
to camera can be of assistance to the botanical draughts-
man, but no matter how sophisticated they are, they can-
not achieve the desired representation.
In general, the drawing is done using dried material as
model. Colour is not often used in a scientifi c drawing. It
is frequently the case that a plant fi rst has to be recon-
structed on the basis of dried specimens. Sometimes the
material is crumpled up a bit, and folded over, sometimes
partially lost. As a result, reconstruction can be quite a
challenge.
I n de Renaissance reisden met ontdekkingsreizigers,
vaak botanici en tekenaars mee. In nieuw ontdekte
Men

its beauty when it cautiously opens up; it is moving and
always interesting. New species continue to be discov-
ered; again requiring documentation after a complete
analysis is made. And, the more you know of plants, the
more you observe.
In her work at Naturalis, formerly the National Her-
barium of the University of Leiden, she primarily draws
plants and flowers from Southeast Asia. She also works
for the Flora of the Netherlands.

Observation with pen and brush

”
Anita Walsmit SachsObservation with pen and brush
Kijken met pen en penseelBotanical artists have been illustrating the most beautiful flowers and plants, each in their own way, for many centuries. Like nature itself, the interpretations of it by the artist are endless in their variations. This can be beautifully observed in the collection of illustrated botanical books in Teylers Museum, for instance; you can page through them digitally, since they were recently made available on the web-site. This is, however, only a part of the framework within which the work of Anita Walsmit Sachs can be placed. Because of her extended experience in scientific bota-nical illustration, her drawings have the appearance of effortlessness. The fact is that, whereas a scientific botanical drawing has to be perfect in every detail, in a personal interpretation it is absolu-
tely essential to know what to leave out. This is the very essence of the personal work of Anita Walsmit Sachs.
The new interest in nature, in ‘green’ and everything related to it, has led to a gradual increase in the number of people interested in botanical art. The result is that old prints from botanical books, painted in, decorate the smooth walls of many a post-modern interior.
The works in this publication once again show the extent of the attention and the elegance with which Anita Walsmit Sachs represents nature. Therefore it is my desire that this publication will contribute to the further growth and flourishing of botanical art in the Netherlands.
