BiographyRodrigoisaPhDstudentinthenorthofSpain(OviedoUniversityandSERIDA).AfterworkingintheSocio-Ecologicallab(AutonomousUniversityofMadrid)withecosystemservicedeliverytoparticipatorystakeholders,hehascontinuedstudyingecosystemservicesinamoreappliedway.HeistryingtodevelopsuggestionsofmanagementforpollinationandpestcontrolecosystemservicesthatencourageabalancebetweenbiodiversityandagriculturalproductivityinNorth-westSpain(Asturias)cider-appleorchards.

Applefruitcropsdependonpollinationandpestcontrolservicesprovidedbydifferentanimalssharingacommonlandscape.Westudiedtheenvironmental(i.e.landscape)correlatesandthefunctionalroleofbiodiversity(abundanceandrichness)ofpollinatinginsectsandinsectivorousbirdsin26cider-appleorchardsinNWSpain.Pollinatorrichnessandabundanceincreasedalongagradientofavailabilityofseminatural habitataroundorchards,whereasbirdbiodiversitywasmoreaffectedbyfarmmanagements.Wildbeeabundance,butnotrichness,affectedpositivelypollinationsuccess(seedset),whereasbothbirdabundanceandbirdrichnesspromotedinsectivory rates.Ourstudyprovidesevidencethatthereisnotasinglepatternforthebiodiversity-ecosystemservicelinks.Thisisbecausemanydifferentanimalgroupsareinvolvedinprovidinglocalecosystemservices,suchascropproduction.
