Abstract

The increase in steel construction in Venezuela, since 1988 and in Colombia since 1993 is

due in great measure to the presence and availability of the high frequency electric

resistance welded steel structural shapes manufactured as per the ASTM A769, JIS G 3353

and COVENIN 2897 Standards. The variety of uses and applications in the construction of

buildings and bridges justified carrying out experimental studies to determine its behaviour

under fatigue conditions and its resistance to environmental corrosion.The test results

confirmed that these structural shapes are classified in the B category of the AISC

Specifications.The experimental studies for corrosion resistance in five different regions of

Venezuela, with corrosion velocity of 1.000 μm/year and under saline soils during two

consecutive years, evaluated under ASTM and ISO standards, show a passivated condition

on the steel electroforge zone.
