Sangiran is an archaeological site in Central Java, Indonesia. It is located 17 kilometers north
of Surakarta Municipality, on Bengawan Solo river valley. According to UNESCO report,
Sangiran is claimed to be one of the most important sites in the world to study human fossils
by scientists, aligned with Zhoukoudian sites in China, Willandra Lakes in Australia, Olduvai
Gorge in Tanzania, and Sterkfontein in South Africa. Furthermore, Sangiran is considered as
one of the world's research centers on the history of ancient human existence, more than 50%
of ancient human fossils were unearthed in Sangiran.
At the provincial level, based on Central Java Provincial Regulation No. 10/2012 on Master
Plan of Central Java Regional Tourism Development (RIPPRDA), Sangiran area is designated
as Provincial Tourism Strategic Area (Kawasan Strategis Pariwisata Provinsi, KSPN) Sangiran
and its surroundings that are located in Provincial Tourism Destination Area “Solo – Sangiran
and Surroundings”. Sangiran area has historical and cultural tourism potential with historical
heritage tour products.
Detail Plan of KSPN Sangiran and its surroundings is focused on tourist destination in the main
area of KSPN which is divided into 2 sub-regions, namely:
1. Sub Area 1, includes: Sangiran Ancient Human Site, Batik Pungsari-Kliwonan Tourism
Village, Padepokan Keris Brojobuwono, Sangiran Edutainment Park, Sangiran Tourism
Forrest, Tourism villages and homestay, and Tourism Dam;
2. Sub Area 2, includes: Pangeran Samudro Gunung Kemukus Tomb, Kedung Kancil Tourist
Park, and Gedungombo Reservoir.
Sub Area 1
Development of Core Zone • Zone A: Sangiran Tourism Site • Zone B: Cultural tourism zone with tourist
attraction of Pungsari-Kliwonan Batik Tourism Village and Padepokan Keris Brojobuwono.
• Zone C: The development zone of the Sangiran Site Area that is directed as a new tourist attraction located outside the core zone of Kalijambe
Sub Area 2
Development of Supporting Zone • Zone A: Cultural tourism zone of Prince
Samudro Tomb of Kemukus and Kedung Ombo Reservoir
• Zone B: Artificial tourist zone Kedung Kancil Tourism Park with the potential water tourism
Development KSPN Sangiran
1. Background
Core Zone is an area functioned as the main entrance of Sangiran tourism, includes sub
terminal in Krikilan Village which is equipped with souvenir shops and public supporting
facilities. Besides, there is also ecotourism-based natural tourism with the potential Dam,
river, forest and agricultural tourism, as well as tower of view equipped with supporting
public facilities.
