Ancient Egyptians

The Afterlife

Tombs Tombs were built to keep the remains of the dead and their

belongings safe. Mummies were placed in coffins which were sealed and placed in tombs.

Objects for the Afterlife Tombs were stocked with material goods that the dead might

need on their journey to the afterworld, including clothing, jewelry and furniture, sometimes built in miniature.

Furniture and Cosmetics Egyptians wanted to take anything with them that would make them comfortable and also make them look good. This included furniture, make up and wigs!

Animals Pets were also mummified and buried in their owner's tombs.

Archaeologists have found the remains of hunting dogs, cats, gazelles and even pet baboons.

Decorations and Wall Murals

Detailed paintings covered the walls and ceilings of the underground tombs, documenting the life of the deceased and imagining the journey to the afterworld.

Shabtis Wealthy Egyptians wanted to have servants in their next life.

Since they couldn’t take their living servants with them, they made little servant statues to be buried with them.

Egyptians believed the shabtis would come to life and go to work for them in their next life.
