Gorudo is a mythical bird and has been held in great veneration in Ind io from time immemorial. Many lndologists hold that this deity is of Dravidian origin.

A stone flog·post, often covered with metal plate, with on image of Gorudo on top, is invdriobly erected in front of the image of the Deity in all Voishnovoite temples. Besides This, another huge idol of Garuda is often installed

• in most Voishnavoite temples, as he is considered to be one of the greatest devotees 01 Lord Vishnu. During the GupTa age, whi ch is referred to as the golden era of Indian History, Ihe Imperi ol sTandard had a Garudo image on il.

Gorudo is represented os 0 large white-necked eagle, but his images in the temples show him with a human trunk. Serpents are the natural food of the qle. The reason lor this enmity is traced in the Ad i PONO of the Mahabhar(' TO the ieolousy between Kodru and Vi noto, the moth.! the serpents and Gorudo respect ive ly.

Only Vishflu coul d have th.se nro born enemi es 'Garuda, the mighty eag le and Shesho, the great serpent wa it UpO fl him. He IIses Shesha as the couch afld Garuda as the mou fl t.
