Ogaweni is a rural area south of Durban in Umbumbulu District.

TRADITIONAL ROOT VEGETABLE

Amadumbe is a traditional root vegetable.

It is mostly grown in KZN and Eastern Cape

Communities grow it in backyards for food, but in Ogagweni things have changed

IMPROVING LIVES• Through selling

Amadumbe, many people, especially women like Tholakele Nxele, have build modern houses, bought cars and educate their children

BEAUTIFUL PLACE

The beauty of Ogagweni is added by green vegetation and the Amadumbe plantation.

Most women here are bread winners making a living through planting and selling Amadumbe.Some make up to R4000 a month

of University of KZN started the project when he came back from the US where he did a Doctorate in Agriculture.

He mentors the women farmers and helps them with the logistics

AMADUMBE DISHES The farmers sell their

Amadumbes to retail stores like Woolworths.

Amadumbe can be cooked in the traditional or western way.

It is finding its way into some top restaurants.

ORGANIC FOOD PRODUCERS Ogagweni farmers

are registered and certified organic producers

Organic is cheap as it does not require buying expensive fertilizers and pestisides
