Alfred Nobel

Alfred Nobel wanted to have a more peaceful world

after he created his devastating invention, dynamite. Years

after his brother died from his dangerous invention he

created the Nobel Peace prize. The Nobel Peace prize is for

those who are Progressing towards a peaceful and

innovative world, between nations.

Alfred Nobel was born in Stockholm, Sweden on October 21, 1833. Alfred was the

fourth child of Immanual and Caroline Nobel. When Alfred was young he was very prone to

illness, but very curious towards explosives. In 1842 Alfred was privileged to be privately

tutored and would become fully knowledgeable about chemistry by the age 16. Alfred was also

fluent in many languages such as English, Russian, and German. (Encyclopædia Britannica)

Alfred Nobel had many Paton’s for his inventions, but his most famous is Dynamite.

Alfred had always had an interest in explosives. He had always hoped to find a practical way to

detonate explosives. In 1865 he invented the blasting cap. It was a small metal cap, and mercury

fulimate which exploded by a shock or heat. In 1867 Alfred Nobel created his second most

important invention, which was dynamite. Dynamite consists of nitroglycerin and kieselghur and

when they are combined the nitroglycerin becomes dry. Before dynamite, nitroglycerin was

dangerous to transport and was very unstable. The result of the mixture was that it was easier to

handle, than nitroglycerin alone. In 1867 Alfred got many Patents from Great Britain for his

invention dynamite. Dynamite led to building canals, roads , tunnels and Alfred’s immense

The Nobel Peace prize was created by Alfred Nobel before he died. When Alfreds

brother died a French Newspaper made a mistake thinking Alfred was dead, but his brother

really was. After being condemded by the newspaper nobel created the nobel peace prize to

make up for his early obituary. He left instructions for how his money should be spent for the

prizes. The catigorys for the Nobel peace prize are Physics, Chemistry, Physiology, Medichine,

and Literature.( Biography) Alfred wanted the award to go to people who "shall have done the

most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing

armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses" (Alfred Nobel).

Nobel had developed angina pectoris in 1895, and later died from cerebal hemmorage.

He died in his villa in San Remo, Italy on December 10, 1896. At the time of Nobel’s death he

had 90 factories for ammunition and explosives. His family was surprised to see a large amount

of his fourtune was instructed to be used for the Nobel Peace prize. (Encyclopædia Britannica)
