How Alcohol Affects the Body

One Drink Can Make Some People Have an Unsound Mind!

WHY?•Empty Stomach

•Gender

•Age

•Nationality

•Health Issue

Brain

Alcohol

• Depresses the central nervous system

• Contracts brain tissue

• Destroys brain cells -- which unlike many other types of cells in the body, do not regenerate.

Heart

• Heart disease

• Stroke

• High blood pressure

• Irregular Heartbeats

• Heart Failure.

Alcohol Can Cause:

Lungs  Alcohol Can Cause

• Pulmonary Infections • Pneumonia • Lung Collapse.  • An intoxicated person loses his

reflexes and can't clear his airway when he vomits.

• Stomach contents may get sucked into the lungs, which can lead to choking or pneumonia.

LiverAlcohol• Liver damage often begins with

a fatty liver, and may progress to alcoholic hepatitis.

• Followed by the buildup of scar tissue known as cirrhosis.

• Cirrhosis can change the structure of the liver and choke off blood flow.

• This can cause varicose veins, which can rupture, triggering catastrophic bleeding.

Liver Cirrhosis, CT Scan

Stomach Alcohol • Irritates Stomach• Causes Gastritis• Ulcers • Acid RefluxGastritis is an

inflammation of the mucous membrane that lines the stomach.

Erosion in that lining can cause constant oozing of blood into the stomach or, if a vessel ruptures, major bleeding.

Kidneys

Alcohol

• Is a diuretic that increases urine output.

• Prolonged heavy drinking can cause kidney failure.

Small intestines & pancreas:

Alcohol • blocks the absorption and

breakdown of nutrients by damaging the cells lining the stomach and intestines, and by decreasing the amount of digestive enzymes secreted by the pancreas.

• The pancreas can become inflamed and leak digestive enzymes, which then attack the pancreas itself.

Blood

Alcohol can cause • Anemia • Abnormal blood clotting,

which results in excessive bleeding and easy bruising.

• Impairs the function of white blood cells, increasing susceptibility to infection.

Joints & Muscles

Alcohol can cause

• Osteoporosis

• Arthritis

• Deform the joints.

• It can atrophy muscles and cause acute muscle pain and weakness.

Research Has Found Causes

• Numerous food allergies

• Chemical allergies

• Hypoglycemia

• Vitamin deficiencies

• Mineral deficiencies

The Root of Alcoholism? Body Chemistry

The Biochemical Approach

1. Detox

2. Repairing the Damage

3. Aftercare

Substances must be Removed Permanently for Successful Long

Term Sobriety

• Drugs

• Alcohol

• Caffeine (caffeine is a drug that aggravates and promotes *hypoglycemia)

SUGAR

• Sugar (alcohol is a sugar that reaches the brain very quickly. If you continue to eat sugar, it leads to cravings for alcohol.

• Sugar also aggravates and promotes hypoglycemia)

Nicotine

• -Nicotine (nicotine is a drug that aggravates and promotes hypoglycemia)

• (*Hypoglycemia is a metabolic disorder that if left untreated most often takes the alcoholic back

to the drink)

• Another important factor that is a common denominator with traditional treatment is that the person with alcoholism needs to stay away from people who drink and drug and places where alcohol and drugs will be present.

Do Not Drink Wine Nor Strong Drink

Let Her Not Drink Wine or Strong Drink

Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging, and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise

It is Not for Kings to Drink Wine, Nor for Princes Strong

Give Strong Drink Unto HimThat is Ready to Perish

Woe unto them that rise up early in the

morning, that they may follow

strong drink, that continue until night, till wine inflame

1,400 Students Aged 18 to 24 Killed Every Year

Alcohol-Related Accidents • Motor vehicle fatalities were

the most common form of alcohol-related deaths. The statistics included college students killed in car accidents if the students had alcohol in their blood, even if the level was below the legal limit.

Drunk driving accidents injure far more than their immediate

teenage victims:

• a brother or sister may be plagued with guilt for not taking the car keys

• an older neighbor may forever regret buying the alcohol

• a classmate may live with nightmares for being the one who was driving drunk but survived.

One of his prized possessions was the SUV he had customized.

Reggie Stephey was a senior at

Lake Travis High School near Austin. He played baseball

and football. College was in his future.

In 1999, 20 year old Jacqueline Saburido left her

family and friends in Venezuela to come to

Austin, Texas.

She traded flamenco dancing and jet skiing for an adventure in a new country

and the chance to learn English.

At the same time Jacqui was on her way home, Reggie was driving home, too.

Put Reggie was drunk (first time).

In a split second, their lives would be changed

forever.
